I live next to the parking lot. It used to be a baseball field. I have enjoyed watching the kids play games there-both league and pick-up. I liked chatting with people and the kids as they happened by. I have seen young fathers pitching baseballs to their young children and little ones learning how to play soccer.
Now, I have a wooden fence to look at and car engines that I can listen to. How exciting - NOT. I miss the green grass and the activity up on the field. I miss watching parents teaching kids how to play sports and games of all kinds- an American tradition. Where are they going to do this that is as convenient as right up the street? What will be left to play on? (Asphalt gets pretty hard under the feet, not to mention HOT in the summer.)
There has always been congested traffic at Kirkham and Sappington between 3:30 and 4pm. There will STILL be congested traffic at Kirkham and Sappington at this time. Most residents understand that and either avoid the area at this time, or take a different route.
Possibly a little (or alot) of patience is needed by drivers at this time of day and at this location. This is not a new situation. For the sake of preserving the natural land, and a natural field for the children to play on, I would suggest NOT proceeding forward with this project of asphalting the earth.

As the person who has been having conversations with the parents/PTO, district, and City of Glendale police chief about the concerns of parking for over 5 years now, I thought it best to post a comment. I don't want to lose any green space either. But we have serious safety concerns due to our current pick up and drop off at NG. The city has bent over backwards to help and support us. But since parking on the narrow streets of Glendale is an issue (including our parents parking on lawns, blocking driveways, etc), we have put a burden on our neighbors. Parents consistently use the clearly marked fire lane when picking up students during the day or volunteering in the classrooms. Parents and grandparents regularly park in no parking areas. Parents and grandparents regularly don't follow our drop off and pick up guidelines. Parents and grandparents often block our bus zone. We have guardians who start lining up at 3:00 to pick up their children. We have to start and stagger our dismissal at least 10-15 min early because if we don't, the intersection of Sappington and Kirkham gets backed up and blocked. The city leaders have urged us to keep that intersection clear for obvious safety reasons. We looked at having cars pick up behind school on our playground and exit on Chelsea but this would require cars driving in between our playgrounds making an even more serious safety issue. We are fortunate we have not had a major accident due to our parking issues. If we put off this project you will be putting your kids and our community at risk. When the discussions and planning were happening for the project, we took into consideration that we were losing some green space. But we also know we will have plenty of green space and once the field is laser graded and has irrigation added, we will be able to make sure the remaining green space we have left will be entirely usable. Currently our fields are not level, full of weeds, rocks, and dog do do. There will be plenty of space

Children attending the school and living nearby need a place to enjoy running, playing, and relieving the stress of the school day. They need a place to be kids more than too-lazy-to-walk adults need parking spots.

I love Glendale. Have lived her 15 of the past 18 years. One drawback is no parks, lack of green space. Instead of taking away green space, we should look for ways to add. More asphalt is one less place for kids to play.
