This is probably the biggest mistake that Laport could ever make! I ALWAYS looked forward to band, it was enjoyable and gave me a little more confidence in myself. Music is such an important part of anyone's life.

Solid evidence shows that music and the arts build stronger language skills, improve memory stimulates the senses and provide outlets for kids who might not otherwise be able to participate in school activities such as sports. Eliminating band and choir is not a choice parents want eliminated.

I am a BSU student who is hoping to be a music educator someday. I have had the privilege to work with Mrs. Bass this semester. Mrs. Bass has been one of the best practicum teachers I have ever worked with. She is kind and willing to share her wealth of teaching knowledge and resources with both me and her students. Cutting this program would cause many students to lose a beloved teacher who encourages them to do their best work everyday. Music is an extremely important part of education for students. It provides a creative outlook and it has been proven to help raise tests scores. As I read their reasoning behind cutting the program, it said they were making room for STEM programs, however that term is dated and has been changed in the last few years to STEAM which includes the arts. The announcement states that elementary educators will incorporate music into their classrooms, but that will not provide an in depth appreciation for music. They also did not account for any music education at the secondary level. In high school, music classes were may favorite classes and that is where I learned the confidence to sing and speak in front of people. I am deeply saddened that the students of Laporte School will not have that opportunity and I hope a decision is made to keep the music program.

Taking music away from the kids is so wrong weather they want to be in music or not but they need to at least have the option. Music is a very important thing to me. I have played the violin since I was in 6th grade so many years and before that I was in choir. My husband and I were thinking of sending our kids to Laporte school however if this option is being taken away from them then we will send our kids to a school that has that option because having the options is so important to me!!

Music is as important to some students for survival as science and math is to others. Music is the one class that our schools should never cut.

I am a student at BSU studying Vocal Music Education. I am studying music because a wonderful music educator had an impact on me as a young student. Mrs. Bass is my current cooperating teacher for my practicum placement, and it is very evident that she has the same impact on her students. To be cutting the music program would be cutting one of the most inspiring educators that I have met. Not only would it be devastating to the school to lose a professional like Mrs. Bass, it would be heartbreaking and a disadvantage to the students. Music is not just a time filler in the day, it educates students about cultures and people from all around the world. Which I have found to be one of the most valuable experiences to date. I ask the school board to reconsider this decision and most importantly, talk to the students who they will be enduring the consequences.

Many of my high school memories revolve around my band and choir classes. Mrs. Bass is an amazing music teacher! She truly cares about her students and their success! The only ones who truly lose here are our children!
