My 5th Grader at STrawberry has thrived under Phoebe Dong’s gifted teaching talent and is continuing with the viola in 6th grade due to her inspiration and Music education. It has been necessary to have the smaller group lessons at the individual elementary schools as well as the large group ensembles. As a former strong player myself (violin for 15 yrs) - smaller group as well as private instruction is key to progressing on a stronger instrument - the most difficult to learn of all instruments. Please keep our amazing orchestra program going without any cuts!

Music is way too important to cut, especially when our program is already half the schedule of neighboring schools and not the full recommended schedule for budding musicians.

Music education is crucial in our schools and to the brain development of our kids. Research over the years strongly supports the benefits of music education. Music helps is so many additional ways other than just providing music --as noted in a recent review by Sarah Benz and colleagues in 2015 musical training is associated with "enhanced cognitive performance spanning from executive functions to creativity. " We need more music education in our schools, not less!

The gifted MVSD music teachers transform our children's lives, our community, and by extension, all the communities our children inhabit. “Cost-saving" is purely relative when measured against the price our kids and society pays each time students' access to a robust arts education is diminished. Valuing teachers, their livelihoods, and their enormous contribution to the raising up of our children is crucial, and how we as a community respond in this moment will in turn form a critical part of our children's education, both outside and inside the classroom. When our children bear witness to a community supporting their public school arts curriculum and teachers, our kids in turn feel the community valuing *them*—a foundation not only for successful learning but for living meaningful lives.
