Pat Killian is a true gift to the students of STM and their families - she is a unique teacher and all 3 of my kids have cherished the time they spent in her class and working on her projects. Only narrow mindedness would not value the education and training Mrs Killian's had provided to all her students.

I am sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I would like to send our support for Mrs. Killian. She is certainly unconventional but my kids have loved her. She is a safe place for kids to express opinions and debate issues. Olivia, who is graduating high school this year, said that she killed her world history classes (AP world) all due to Mrs. Killian's teaching about the world, world religions, and current conflicts. Joey and James loved the political Cartoons. Olivia loved how she was able to participate in debate of issues that affect the church and society in a very non-judgmental atmosphere. In one day, Joey learned a ton when mrs. Killian substituted for Mrs. foster. The kids are happy and safe in her class. They are clearly learning alot. We are confused, sad, and want Mrs. Killian to know that we support her.

Mrs. Killian is not an assert to STM she is an advocate for all students. She definetly needs to stay and be a mentor to the younger teachers.

I have now had three daughters (20, 18 and 13yrs old) who have had Mrs. Killian as a teacher. She is by far and wide the favorite teacher. I think perhaps it is her non traditional style of teaching and hands on approach that leaves an impression on the kids. Just something as simple as allowing them to sit on top of their desks during circle time to discuss current events engages the children in their learning. It is a special thing when a teacher enjoys the children as much as the children enjoy the teacher. I believe she is an asset to our school and I sincerely hope that she will be with us for many years to come.

Mrs. Killian has taught all three of our children. My son, now a freshman in college, did very well at Chapel Hill High in his history classes and continues to make A's in college in history, thanks to Mrs. Killian. Our son is currently a junior at CHHS and has taken world History and currently in AP US History and doing very well. He too learned so much from Mrs. Killian in such a positive and creative way. Reading from the book does not do it for many students. Her projects, her ways of making students think, her debates, her fairness to show other cultures, and religions in such a positive way. As a parent, I have even learned a few things I never knew about the world, from my child that was/is in her class. Parents and students are involved in her class. This administration has tried to make Mrs. Killian present this as a retirement, like they have with other tenured teachers. She won't leave that way. If she has to leave, she will leave knowing that she did the best job she could at STM. She is not a hypocrite and will not leave with the truth not being told. We all need to stand together and make it known to this Administration that we won't stand for this!! We are the customer, we pay the bills. No parents, no students, no tuition....no school. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This administration is not following the golden rule!! Keep Mrs. Killian!! If they let this happen the reputation of St. Thomas More Middle School will truly be tarnished in the Chapel Hill Community and it will cause many prospective students to turn elsewhere for their education. There are other choices!! We are losing parents and students even now because of what is happening in the middle school. Help keep our school with the high reputation that we have, thanks to teachers like Pat Killian. Otherwise we are no better than the political public schools. Keep Pat Killian!!

I believe that Mrs Killian's strengths are in connecting with the children, making them feel capable as students, sharing historical information in a way that is fully engaging, and being creative in how she presents new information so that all students can learn the information regardless of their learning style. Why would we let go of such an exceptional teacher?

Mrs. Killian has inspired my daughter in ways that I have appreciated and greatly respected. Her creativity and engagement of the students, and the respect she gives them are examples of the reasons that I have believed in and paid for an STM education for my child. I am greatly disheartened by the systematic elimination of veteran teachers for entry level and I pray that the administration is not valuing the dollar more than what is best for our children. Please keep her.

I will be very concerned about the school's reputation if the administration terminates this teacher after reviewing the level of shareholder and customer opposition. It will send a message to the community that the shareholders’ viewpoints and concerns do not matter at STM. Mrs. Killian has a special way of educating and making the lessons "stick". Her teaching style and expertise is much needed in the middle school. Considering how much she has contributed to the school and the students, it will be very heartbreaking if this petition does not work and she is let go this way. I hope the administration listens to the shareholders and especially the STUDENTS on this and reconsiders extending Mrs. Killian's contract.

Mrs. Killian is amazing!

Mrs. Killian brings an extremely important element to the classroom - critical thinking. Even more importantly, she does it in a nonjudgemental and loving way. She doesn't teach kids stuff - she teaches them how to think. In my opinion, you don't get a better teacher than that. We are very sorry to hear about this decision.
