My daughter has Ms. Nelson as her ASL teacher. She absolute adores her, and has learned much from her this year. This teacher needs to remain on this campus, and given time this summer to attempt the certification test again. Right now DENTON ISD has the grading policy of allowing students multiple attempts at passing assessments, why should it be different for one of their teachers? If we are going to set the standard for our kids, we need to allow it for teachers as well. There are 5 attempts at passing the test for certification, as long as she has passed her yearly evaluation from campus administration, she should be allowed to keep her job and allowed to try the test again over the summer.

Mrs. Nelson is not only a great teacher, but a great person as well. Last year i learned multiple life lessons from her and although I no longer go to Guyer, losing her as a teacher means less students would feel the need to learn this amazing language. She makes ASL so fun, you forget you're at school. We need her to stay.

Mrs. Nelson's influence and ability in the classroom are more than enough to qualify her to teach at Guyer. Throughout my 4 years on campus, I've gone through several ASL teachers. Mrs. Nelson has been the objective best and has played a vital role in my education. I have learned more in the past 2 years under her, than at any other point in my secondary language education. keeping her in the classroom is simply the smartest choice for both student involvement and retention. Whether or not this decision lies in the hands of the admins, simply kicking her out for a sudden lack of official qualifications is not an option.

I only had her for one year as my ASL teacher, but she was amazing. It is so rare to find a teacher as a great as she is. One of the best things about her is that she teaches using signs pertaining to our area. For example, people up north typically call soda "pop" while us southerners call it either "coke" or "soda". This is a concept very similar in American Sign Language. There are certain variations of signs (you could call it slang) that only Mrs. Nelson has been able to teach me. The last teacher did no such thing and refused to incorporate the variations of this region in her signing. Mrs. Nelson has. She pushes students to do their best and give 110%. She encourages students to sign with deaf people and teaches in a way so that we are able to. She is truly a rare and wonderful teacher. I doubt the school will be able to find anyone that students love as much as her or that teaches the best and most current ASL.

Although I have only attended Mrs. Nelson's class for my 2nd year in asl and couldn't attend for a 3rd year due to moving schools, I feel that my time was well spent in a class with her. I know second chances are hard to come by in the adult world, but if given such a chance I believe that Mrs. Nelson would strive to make use of the opportunity and be a role model for the oncoming students to show perseverance.

Mrs. Nelson is my favorite teacher. Because of her I am nearly fluent in ASL and can communicate perfectly to Deaf people. Because of her I want to be an interpreter for Deaf people and because of her I learned so much about Deaf Culture. She is an amazing teacher and the district is lucky to have her because not all teachers care about education but she is truly passionate about what she does. This reminds me too much of 'Deaf President Now' and its sad. I can't imagine her not being at Guyer for my senior year.
