Change the WCSD Teacher Overage Policy

This move will prove to be incredibly disruptive to every student impacted and exhibits poor planning and execution on the part of administrators. As a parent, I find the lack of transparency in the timing of this decision extremely frustrating

It is NOT in the best interest of children to reassign a teacher this late into the year UNLESS there were misconduct/legal reasons to do so for their protection, ESPECIALLY for a lack of only two students, when likely students may move in during the year. Ridiculous!

Mr. V in all my years of education as both a student and a parent is the most innovative and truly inspiring teaching I have had the honor of knowing. Not many of us are ever blessed with someone of his caliber, brilliance, energy, passion and heart. It is funny to say but it should be said, Mr. V is comparable to Mr Keating in Dead Poets Society. My 4th grade daughter is devistated and so are we. This is a disruptive, impacting and difficult loss for our daughter, family, students and the school as a whole. If the matter is only two students, I question what that dollar amount means to the county? And if the county can’t get past the dollars then I would certainly be willing to donate to make up this short fall. And I would venture to guess there are many of us out there that would do the same. Please help us keep Mr. V at Roy Gomm. We are behind him 120% Oh Captain my Captain!

Being an educator and having gone through a couple of overages myself, I know firsthand how difficult and upsetting losing a teacher can be. The negative effects of losing a teacher can affect a student’s well-being. If there can be another alternative, please consider a better solution for these well deserving students.

Mr V is an excellent teacher that has inspired the 4th grade class and others at Roy Gomm. We need to keep him there.

5 weeks into the school year is amazing to demand such a change Surely there is a better way!

I was just informed by our principal John Sutherland that WCSD has altered our teacher allocation and subsequently my son will certainly loose one of his co-teachers, and possibly be moved to a new classroom altogether. I am devastated and frustrated by this decision. The students, families, and teachers are being treated as numbers on a page, and no regard for our well-being has been factored into this decision. The Weber-Daines classroom is successful and should be rewarded. Surely, ripping apart a successful teaching team should be a last resort and the school district can find it in its budget to hire a new teacher or two to solve the discrepancy. I can’t believe the school board handles teacher allocation annually by disrupting classrooms in there second month of school. My son has succeeded this year beyond my highest expectations of him. I give every bit of credit to the joy of being a part of the Weber-Daines classroom. To force this change will certainly disrupt every second grader at Roy Gomm, and is so disrespectful to the hard work put in by this great teaching team and the rest of the teachers affected. Kids need stability. If you punish these young students who have done nothing wrong, they might not be able to trust their educators ever again. I certainly won’t be able to trust this school board to make decisions based on their students’ academic and/or emotional best interests if this continues. Respectfully, Carrie Buehler

My son Thomas is flourishing in the Weber-Daines class. This is going to definitely impact this classroom and the students negatively. And the teachers have planned to teach these students for a year, and their hard work and planning apparently was a total waste of time. Keep the classes as they are now, fix whatever you need to fix BEFORE the start of the school year.

Decisions should be made well before count day and students have bonded with their teachers! Minus two does not account for the negative impact to students, teachers, and schools!

This is a HORRIBLE, demoralizing decision that seems to have been made by the WCSD without considering how many lives are affected. Mr. V has already made such a positive impact on his 4th grade students; the children and the teacher deserve better treatment. My 2nd grader and his classmates and teacher will suffer with a much larger class size and mid-term reorganization. Please do the right thing and reverse this poor decision. Keep Mr. V at Roy Gomm where he belongs!

Mr. V is one of the best teachers we have experienced in grade school. My daughter has been very upset with the news, which is therefore causing disruption to her education. The fact that this decision has been made due to a threshold of two students under the cap is unacceptable. Every year Gomm gains a few students later in the year due to families moving. Furthermore, although we are not personally affected by the change to the second grade, I cannot imagine having my young child in an overcrowded classroom when they are still learning to deal with social practices and learning how to be good students. As a Washoe County parent who supports education, I feel that this decision needs to be re-evaluated and a better solution needs to be presented. Shannon Ferguson

If we are short 2 students, is there any way to take in 2 variance students and get a grace period for count day? I heard all the kids in Mr. V's class were crying today when they heard the news. Our kids and our teachers deserve better! Since the statue Nevada Revised Statutes (300.700) has profound consequences for kids, teachers, and schools, enforcement of the statute should have the flexibility to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Please consider doing what is best for the children.

This is unbelievable. It's such a bad, distributive move by Washoe county School district to remove a teacher allocation 5 weeks into school year. This will negatively effect students moral and academic performance. We hope by signing this petition Washoe county School district would hear our concern and reverse this decision.

Do what’s best for the kids.

Please don’t let innocent kids suffer and hinder learning because of district technicalities.

I 100% agree with what was said in the petition’s language. WCSD needs to consider what is best for the students— they are, after all, our future and the district is supposed to consider how decisions like this will negatively affect their learning environment and overall attitude about school.
