Change the WCSD Teacher Overage Policy

This man is a gem of a teacher and my nephew adores him. It would be a shame to remove him furing the school year

The ripple is incredible. Teachers enter the year prepped for the grade they are about to teach, but the rug is pulled out from under them as classes compact and teachers move to a different grade and/or different school. Students bond with their teacher and expectations are set for the year ahead. But that is shattered. Speaking with several teachers last year at Jessie Beck it sounds like this is standard practice for WCSD. A few teachers that had moved into the district said it’s not anything they had ever seen. Point is, it’s in line with some of the mismanagement at the senior level of WCSD. It’s simply how things are done. That is NOT good enough.

WCSD needs to leave teachers once started the semester at a school. It seems like whomever does the allocations needs to be held responsible -

We lost 18 class periods at our school due to the current allocation system. Some of our classes now have over 40 students (times 6 classes for a single teacher!). Our PE classes are over 50 students per class. It’s unsafe for students and overwhelming for teachers. We wait on pins and needles in prayer for new allocations, yet we’re already 7 weeks into the school year. It’s wrong what is happening to our students and teachers because of the broken allocation process.

This moving around teachers happened several times in my boys' classrooms at DDES. It is a challenge for the children to adjust to a new class and a new teacher. Please stop doing this to our kids and teachers!

As a teacher, I am continually blown away by how disruptive to a child’s school education losing a teacher or splitting up your class based on a count day six weeks into the school year can be. Please let’s change this!

Supporting this petition that puts our students first and requests WCSD does as well.

Funding for teachers and quality education for students should be our primary concern.

I have not heard of any other school district that has a procedure like this, so many weeks after the start of school.

Please review and reverse the overage of Abby Oliohant at Jessie Beck Elenentary as well. This is the second time in two years at two different schools she has been dismissed due to the current archaic policy. The administrators at the district office must do better. This is not acceptable. Improve the process!

Our daughter is in fourth grade at Roy Gomm and her class size is already 29. This decision would be not only disruptive and harmful to the learning of 92 students but is inappropriate after 6 weeks of school. This decision is unnecessary and contradicts the Nevada Revised Statues regarding class sizes that will be affected in both 2nd and 4th grades as well after teachers and students are shuffled around. Our Roy Gomm community is a family that supports our children’s best learning practices with excellent teachers, administrator, and support staff. Please reconsider this harmful decision and stand up for what is best for our students.

Please don’t re-assign Mr. V. My neice is in his class and came home so excited after that first week of class and proudly and correctly pronounced his last name. She then smiled and said, “But we just call him Mr. V! I really like him!!” Please don’t disrupt so many students. Thank you!

This needs to be changed, our kids suffer from this across the county it’s ridiculous and our children need something to happen to change this ridiculous statue out in place!!!

This is disruptive. District needs to do better.

As an educator myself - I can understand the financial burden of our educational institutions. However, be open to creative ways to supplement a teachers salary. I am more than happy to advise - as I have consulted on similar challenges such as this; and resulted in success for the students + teachers + district and parents.

I am overwhelmed by the response of my kiddos, my parents, and my community. While I don't believe I deserve the accolades, I am beyond thankful. This is an unfortunate policy that impacts, I believe, the districts ability to attract and retain teachers. Roy Gomm is lucky because the parents understand their power and voice in affecting change. This policy is district wide. Many schools, and teachers, silently endure this because they have no voice. Be the voice of change for those schools too.

This is just shameful! There has to be alternatives and we need people who will explore them... not just reallocate manpower without careful consideration. We need to think of the children and teachers and I am certain that there are people who could and should easily give up their company cars so that the budget doesn’t have to be so extreme... if they were inclined. You know who you are! Greed seems to be rampant at WCSD.

Please do something to fix the state of education in Nevada. Our children deserve better!!!

I implore WCSD to reconsider this decision and the far reaching, negative ramifications it will have on the children affected by it. In addition, it is imperative to re-examine the short-sightedness of this decision and the 2 person deficit that initiated this decision given the likelihood that 2 additional students will move into the school at some point this year.
