As a teacher at a local private elementary school I am often asked if PHS is a viable option for high school in this community. I always say yes, then point out some of the advantages PHS has over private school choices. One of the biggest and most compelling arguments in our favor is the guidance students get from Mr. Tran. Because of his many involvements, he is a resource and a mentor for so many students. His commitment to our students and our college oriented programming is what sets our school apart and brings many families who would otherwise go private. Smaller schools can provide personalized counseling, so having Mr. Tran bring that caliber of support weighs heavily on the decision whether or not to "Go Public". But to reduce his presence on campus by 40% will have a profound effect on not only the counseling dept, but on the other programs he advises. There is simply no way he would be able to do his current job with a reduction of hours. Many students would not be able to receive his guidance, nor would the other counselors be able to handle the extra work in an effective manner. The quality would be diminished. We'd lose our advantage. Most important, the students would suffer the greatest loss. They are the ones most directly affected by this decision. They are the ones who go to Mr. Tran for reasons far beyond class enrollment or a-g requirement questions. Tran develops such a rapport with students that they go to him with questions about their personal future: their doubts and fears as well as their dreams and goals. Supporting the students is not a part time job. It is a full time commitment, and he goes beyond the call of duty for their sake. For these reasons I strongly urge you to keep Mr. Tran full-time at PHS.
