Mr. Collins is an English teacher at Las Lomas High School, and is regarded as one of the better teachers, and has been teaching for three decades. Unfortunately, our principal, Mr. Campbell, believes that Mr. Collins is creating an "unsafe learning environment" for the students. He cites that not everyone is participating in group discussions (He's only visited the classroom a few times to observe; small sample size). These claims are false. His students claim that there is above average participation in his class, and besides, in any class, there are going to be people not participating, so that reason is rather weak. Mr. Collins is a non-conformist of sorts, he teaches rather differently than most teachers, and he strays from the Common Core agenda. Campbell, being an openly big Common Core advocate, obviously is not pleased, Mr. Collins may have his own style of teaching, but he is always there to help you with school work or talk to you in general. Unlike many classes these days, students actually learn new things in his class. Many students regard him as either one of the best teachers at Las Lomas, or their favorite. Due to Campbell denouncing Collins, Collins obviously wasn't too happy, and has requested a transfer to a different school (Either that or he's saying that because Campbell will give him the ax anyways). Mr. Collins is going through a rough period, as his wife's cancer has returned, and Campbell, knowing this, has not stopped his harassment of Mr. Collins. This loss would be devastating to the students and future students of Las Lomas, as they would be losing one of their best teachers. Please sign this petition to show your support of Mr. Collins.

I had Mr. Collins my freshman year, and he is by far my favorite English teacher I've ever had. He treats his students with respect, and allows flexibility because he trusts and respects his students more than other teachers. As a student, this is rewarding and gives students more confidence. While other teachers might not agree to his unorthodox style, to the students he brings humor and gives the respect students want.

I was a student of Mr. Collins for AP English at Miramonte High School and he was one of the teachers that I learned the most from during those years. I am upset to hear that he is being treated unfairly at Las Lomas.

Two years out of high school, Mr. Collins' lessons are some of the few that still apply to my life and to the real world. One of the only teachers who follows through and succeeds in preparing students for life after graduation. Any school should feel lucky to have a teacher who urges students to push the envelope and think differently.

Mr. Collins is the teacher that has by far made the biggest impression on my education in my four years at Las Lomas. Considering all the incredible staff at Las Lomas, that is saying a lot. He genuinely cares about his students and encourages them on a daily basis to seek knowledge, question the world, and seek answers that are rarely easy to find. Mr. Collins is an incredible teacher and I am so disappointed that of all people, this unfortunate circumstance would be brought upon him.

Mr. Collins is one of the best English teachers my son has ever had. Why? He encourages critical thinking. He is teaching these kids how important it is to learn to think outside the box and look at the non obvious. My son is a deeper thinker and more self reliant because of Clay Collins. He supports him, not only bin the classroom, but in an extra curricular that is very important to him. It's good not to be status quo and it is so important to have teachers who encourage this. The backpacks and the phones go into storage in this class and they focus on the subjects at hand. They argue. They think. He's patriotic at a time when so many are going the other way. Don't we need more teachers like him???

Seriously? As a parent of a current student of Mr. Collins, I will say that I am pleased with how Mr. Collins is teaching his classes. He's teaching necessary critical thinking skills to his students. How is this a bad thing? Mr. Campbell has probably forgotten that a lot of LLHS parents, myself included, think that Common Core is crap too.
