You are absolutely correct. As a civil engineer I had worked on OFCC projects and the architect/engineering estimates for repair was often significantly inflated. For example, in the 2013 Marlington estimate the cost for replacement of the wastewater treatment plant was budgeted at $410,000. However, the actual cost for the Washington Elementary wastewater treatment plant that I helped design and run the bid tabulation for was in the low $200,000 range. Additionally, the more recent and significantly larger wastewater treatment plant at the middle school came in at $325,000 for actual construction cost.

I don’t have all the facts, but it seems one of the prevailing arguments supporting the shutdown is cost to repair vs. cost to build new. Having been in the construction industry for the past 25 years, it is a rare occasion that repairs even come close to the astronomical cost of building new. They site operating cost vs. student enrollment yet over pay “certain” staff who do not even live in the area. Removing schools lowers property values bc young parents prefer to live in districts with autonomous educational systems. There is a long list of local districts who borrowed federal and state funding to build these conglomerate educational complexes and now are having trouble repaying the money bc the median income just doesn’t support the funding.

8946 Allen Dr. NE so close! One of the reasons we bought our house was the close proximity of the elementary school.
