It is a terrible decision to sell off a Chagall painting. Also, as I understand it the National Gallery will be competing for its proposed new acquisition with the Montreal Gallery, so if it does not manage to acquire the new work, the selloff of the Chagall will have been for naught.
Is there no way the new acquisition can be funded, perhaps over a period of time through fund raising, government loans, etc

I am terribly disappointed with the National Gallery in planning on divesting itself of a Marc Chagall painting. The renowned that the world of art holds for Marc Chagall makes the contemplation of this move astounding and hard to bear. As a member of the National Gallery, and a Canadian, I heartily oppose this move.

Dear supporters of Bryna's petition, I keep fighting especially after yesterday's interview of MM to CBC.
One is clear - until the MPs and the Minister step, NGC wouldnt' even listen to the public opinion and the media coverage f the problem. This is how people who get paid out of our taxes react to the public opinion and request to have a dialogue and search for another solution... do we deserve it?

I have read M. Mayer's message of April 16th and understand the reasons for wishing to acquire the J-L David painting. I do not understand, however, the choice to deaccession the Chagall. Why lose a painting which resonates so deeply with so many Canadians? This too is a great Canadian treasure. And you are prepared to sell it EVEN IF the David goes to Musée de la civilisation in Québec City! Please reconsider. It means a great deal to many people.

Marc Mayer said he canvassed the Gallery's major donors and was unable to get funding to buy the David picture, and that's why he needed to sell the Chagall. Well, CBC's investigation turned up major donors who said they were never asked to donate to this cause.
