The state officially reversed the decision to pull our camping rights. This place holds so much of my family history and I am relieved we get to keep our tradition alive here. We need to stay vigilant about these grounds but for now we can finally breathe.

The LeGrand Reynolds Horsemen’s Camp will soon no longer be available to the individual equestrian for camping. This property has been the one and only site available to horse riders in the State of RI since 1969 when the former Beach Pond Campsite was set aside for horse activities and camp use. Over the years with the help of the equestrians the RI Federation of Riding Clubs has put in a riding arena, shelter, picnic tables and done continuous maintenance on the grounds to assist DEM on the upkeep of the camp. The state now wants to open our camping to all user groups and restrict the usage to only groups that have insurance of a million dollars on top of requiring a permit that would need to be requested a minimum of 30 days in advance. This would eliminate all individual horse people that are not connected to an organization. There are multiple camping facilities available throughout the state that other user groups are welcome in. Horses do not have that same advantage. Doing this would stop horse camping in our state for many and push our own residents, taxpayers, to have to go out of state to camp with their horses. This would also take from the local economy where gas, food, etc. may have been purchased.
This campground is more than a piece of land. It is a part of rider’s family history. Families have grown camping with horses here. Don’t take this away from them!! Let DEM know you support the equestrians keeping the one place they have under the terms it always has been.

Seeing this much support for our camp confirms that I am not the only one who views this land as a vital part of our equestrian home. This momentum proves that our community refuses to let our family history be pushed out of state.

Seeing one hundred people sign this list reminds me of the countless weekends my own family spent at these stables. I never imagined so many others felt the same pull to protect this piece of our history. We have a real path forward now.

I have enjoyed many years of camping with my horses and kids at Lagrange. Taking it away from the equine enthusiast would be detrimental to our ability to carry on this tradition. Allowing bikes in there will be devastating to erosion on the trails.
DEM has slowing been dismantling Beach Pond/ Arcadia Park, abrogating their mission. DEM is slowly talking it all away, no more swimming at Beach Pond, no more canoe camping on the Pawcatuck and now no more horse camping, next will be more trail restrictions.
This is a state asset in that it encourages a large economic contributor to our economy to participate actively on a small state asset. There are other spaces for no horse activities throughout the state. There does not appear to be a demonstrated need to change these rules.
It seems really unfair to exclude individual equine campers from this camp after all the work and time they have put into it so the equine community can have access to it. If you close this to horse campers they will have no other place to go to camp.
This has been such a wonderful place for horsemen(women) to enjoy! Since this is the only horse camping facility in RI, it should stay as restricted for horse people's use. Trails and area have been maintained by volunteers, both in-club and single equestrians for us all to enjoy.
Please do not eliminate this horse camping area. I am an equestrian and camp with my horse to ride in New England. Please keep it a horse camping area. Thank you

I was born and raised in Rhode Island. I ran a horse business for years in Portsmouth. My family and I use this campground several times a year. To lose it would be a travesty! Especially considering the improvements the horse community has made here over the years!
