As a former Latin teacher at Kiser Middle, I will gladly sign this petition. I agree totally with the factual statements of the document. I discovered another benefit: Latin is a grand subject for students to "learn how they individually learn." With that knowledge my students found that they could learn anything.

My child took Latin at Brown Summit which set him up to be able to take both AP Latin and IB Latin at Grimsley. He is now pursuing a degree in the sciences in college. His experience with Latin in middle school helped to accelerate his education.

Latin at the middle school level is an enormous benefit to all students. It provides a foundation unlike any other and sets students up to become better readers in English. Please keep this valuable program alive at Brown Summit MIddle School!

As a parent, teacher, and community member in Guilford County Schools, it’s incredibly frustrating to see the continued erosion of students’ opportunities for learning subjects like Latin at the middle school level. GCS already has limited middle school magnet offerings. Now the subject (Latin) that distinguished Brown Summit Middle School from any other middle school in GCS is being cut without consideration for the repercussions of such a decision and the high school programs through which these students were able to continue their learning. Now only private and charter school students will have such an opportunity to get a leg up in learning the language that is the root of all Romance languages, shares grammatical structure with inflected languages like German and Russian, and provides necessary vocabulary for scientific, medical, and legal fields.

I would like to sign this because I feel that Latin is such a great thing to learn. Latin has helped me find the meaning of different words and it’s easier to understand than other languages. Overall Latin is such a great language that I wish I could learn in my 7th and 8th grade years and maybe even beyond that.

My granddaughter had this course at Brown Summit and continues to use and pursue more of it. Her aunt needed this course in Middle School as she knew at that tender age she would pursue a career in science.
