Homeless encampments are cropping up in Tecolote Canyon, creating an unsafe environment, fire hazards, garbage/waste, and contributing to property theft.
After weeks, one that was reported was finally removed. It included a tent, mattress, BBQ, wood, and a significant amount of additional garbage. The people who lived in this encampment smoked in the woods and, at times, were aggressive to people on the trails.
Currently, in the Clairemont area, the city is required to give these campers 72 hours notice to move, meaning if they've stolen anything (bikes are popular), they have plenty of time to move it to another area. FYI--in downtown, the notice is TWO hours.
There are now two more (known) encampments in one small area of the trails. There is a new San Diego ordinance that should be enforced to stop this from happening:

Please sign this petition to get the police to enforce this ordinance, to request additional patrols on the trails, and to shorten the notice given to illegal campers to no less than 24 hours.

All for supportive services to solve homelessness, but the fire danger and ecological damage have priority. If the canyon burns, so does Clairemont/Linda Vista/Bay Park. Fire prevention should be the priority for all Canyon adjacent residents.
Homeless individuals are safer and are provided more necessary services at city-provided sites. Local residents also have rights - to safe, sanitary and uncluttered streets, parks and sidewalks.
My family uses the trails in Tecolote Canyon multiple times a week. It has become increasing unsafe to walk without being accosted and the the fire hazard is very serious.
I am 69 years old and have lived in Clairemont next to Tecolote canyon my entire life. I used to play in the small creeks catching frogs as a child and go for walks on the trails as an adult. After getting continually harassed by the homeless people I no longer feel safe and have stopped going for walks in the canyon I have loved for 69 years.
Senior apartments built .in 1960’s mostly all wood off gennesse, north of 52. These camps in the canyon below if caught fire could go thru our community of 16 acres very quickly. Please clean it up to keep our rentals going up in flames from a canyon brush fire. Thanh you!
They are dangerous and ruining our children’s feeling if safety. They are scaring a lot of women and sleeping in areas we want to walk our dogs with needles on the street
This is a community area that needs to be protected for the use of the community. We cannot afford the fire hazard either

My home is right on the canyon at street level near the mouth of the canyon. A couple was camped on the other side of my fence this weekend and they were aggressively harassing people who arrived to hike the canyon and terrifying them.
