I am a former DHOH mainstream student in Oster Elementary School. Oster was another home to me. It was a place where I was seen as "Aaron" and not as a strange kid who needs hearing aid to hear. Other students who are deaf or hard of hearing who went to different school said they were bullied and made fun off because they were different. I never experienced that in Oster. I made many friends in Elementary school and they remain my friends in Dartmouth. Please keep the DHOH program in Oster.

Decentralizing deaf and hard-of-hearing education will result in poorly-integrated programs that essentially shunt deaf kids to the side, and treat them as an afterthought.

I cannot say enough how Oster Elementary School and the DHOH program have positively changed my children’s life and therefore my family’s life. The DHOH program has been in the Union School District, particularly in Oster Elementary School for several decades. In doing so, it has created a culture where my children have thrived. It is a place where they fell normal and are fully included. A place where sign language, hearing aids and cochlear implants are accepted and seen as an accessory rather than “flashing neon sign” of their handicap. It is a place where children in DHOH side or the mainstream side have teachers who have the expertise to teach children with hearing disability. It is essential for the wellbeing and growth of hearing impaired children, that educational program recognize the unique nature of deafness and ensure that all hard of hearing and deaf children have appropriate ongoing and fully accessible educational opportunities. Oster provides this to its DHOH students. I urge you to assist me in making sure it continues.
The “normal” students also benefits having the DHOH students in their classroom or in their school. It allows them to learn a new language – sign language. The children will realize at an early age that we are diverse not only in culture, color but also in abilities. It teaches them acceptance and makes their life more fulfilling. Some of my children’s friend took sign language class while they were in Oster. Some of these children may aspire to become audiologist, speech therapist, interpreter, special education teachers etc. because of the opportunity they have to be in school where hearing impairment is supported and embraced.

I am a former DHOH student (mainstream) in Oster. The teachers and students in Oster saw me beyond my hearing aid. It helped me thrive and become successful in school. Please allow other DHOH such as myself to be successful in school because they have teachers who are knowledgeable and vast experience to teach DHOH in mainstream environment.

It is in the best interests of both the deaf and hearing students that they remain together. It has taken many years to develop the D/HOH Program to its current level of excellence at Oster. The success of both deaf and hearing students give Oster its "Distinguished School" title. High academic achievement by many D/HOH students in the Union School District, from elementary through high school, and then on to university level education, begins at Oster Elementary.

Losing this program will be a huge loss to ALL students in the Union school district. Not only are DHOH wonderful kids, but they taught my kids tolerance, compassion, understanding, acceptance of individuals who may seem different, and how to communicate through sign language. This is a great program, please keep it at Oster.

My daughter is not a student of the DHOH program, but she did attend Oster and often spoke of how she felt good about her school because of the inclusion and participation of the DHOH students in the classroom. KEEP DHOH at Oster, it benefits not only the DHOH students!

This program is excellent and relocating it will be detrimental to ALL of the students. I remember this program from when I was in school and the benefits to both hearing and non-hearing children are tremendous. We must keep the program at Oster.

This program has been at Oster for over 50 years! It has been a model program for Deaf Education nationwide. Union School District's Board of Education should be showcasing this program and their collaboration with the Santa Clara County Office of Education instead of allowing it to be moved to another district and location. It's reputation for excellence in academic and communication development of it's students is well-known and acknowledged throughout the state of California both in the educational arena as well as the medical, audiological and technological professions.
