IB Chinese is only offered at West or Skyline in Utah. Phasing out Chinese over a one-year window will cause serious consequences for students who have already made the plan to pursue IB Diploma program with Chinese as their language choice.
Language skills take years to develop, just like other skills in sports and music. Many students have started the Chinese language learning since the elementary school. If IB Chinese is no longer offered in the next year, students would have to be FORCED to start learning a new language. With only 2-3 years (for example, current 9th graders), students are not supported to be successful in their IB Diploma process. It is irresponsible for the school administration to impose this decision without even having student and community input.
IB Chinese is a legacy and tradition at West; it defines what West High value is: responsibility and community. We have to keep it in the West community.

A good way to keep this program running is to request your councelour, or school to take Chinese. This will bring light into the school that people want to ACTUALLY take the program :)

This is more than just a language course. In addition to the cognitive and academic benefits of language learning, Chinese offers valuable cultural insight and global business opportunities. If we are truly committed to preparing career-ready, globally minded students, Chinese must remain a part of the curriculum at West. Not all leadership wanted to phase this language out.

I believe stopping the Chinese language program at West High irresponsible and disservice to future West students. Knowledge of Mandarin is a vital tool for some students who seek a broader perspective of the world and is a vital option for students who seek success in the future world. Perhaps instead of canceling the program, a broader outreach is needed to attract new students.

Removing this program is in no way helping West high. Chinese is very different from English, which is what makes it so valuable for englishs speakers. By learning a language so different it can expand you thinking as well as teach you a valuable skill. KEEP CHINESE!

Parents, we need more voices to bring attention to this. Email our principal, Wayne Culley at-->[email protected]. We have 70+ students registered for Chinese I and II, and now they are shutting them off. Bring attention toi Wayne Culley. He is being unreasonable!!!
