I graduated with an IB diploma from West High School in 2023. I strongly oppose the proposed cut of the Chinese Language program at West High School.
As a former West High student, I can personally attest to the incredible impact this program had on my academic journey and cultural growth. The Chinese program was not just an elective—it was one of the main reasons I chose to attend West High. I had the option of going to Hillcrest or Skyline High School, both of which have strong academic offerings, and I attended each of their respective feeder schools (Midvale Middle and Wasatch Junior High). Yet, I ultimately chose West because of its competitive and immersive Chinese language program.
Cutting this program would:
1. Undermine West High’s reputation for academic excellence, especially in world languages.
2. Diminish the school’s diversity and commitment to global citizenship—values that the school has proudly championed.
3. Drive top-performing, language-focused students to other schools like Skyline and Hillcrest that still offer Chinese.
The program has helped students like me develop global awareness, cultural competence, and academic discipline. In a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected, removing a program like Chinese—a critical language with geopolitical and economic significance—is a step backward.
I urge the reconsideration of this decision and to continue investing in the diverse, high-quality education that makes West High so special.

This program was precious to me and helped me advance critical language skills I still use today. Losing this program would be quite a detrimental loss for West.
Emmy Luo is a wonderful teacher and the Chinese language class at West High School should still be taught.

Mrs. Luo (or as we knew her Luo-Laoshi) was one of the best teachers I had in high school, and the Chinese program that she runs is a great addition to West High School and the IB program there. Chinese continues to be a very important language to learn to communicate with a large part of the world! This program and this wonderful teacher deserve your support!!

Mandarin is spoken by many people throughout the world. Having this language available for students of the area to take is essential to embracing another part of the world’s culture. Please keep the mandarin program at West High School and expand it instead of cutting it.

Cutting Chinese education at West at the exact moment when the ever-changing US-China relationship has become the dominant force in world affairs would be profoundly shortsighted. Even a brief introduction to the Chinese language and culture goes a long way toward better connecting with the ~1/6 of the world's population and economic activity originating in China. (it worked out that way for me in grad school, where I had many Chinese colleagues / collaborators)
Denying West High students the chance to get a head start on this will disadvantage those of them who want make a name for themselves in the wider world after graduation.

Helen FOSTER SNOW graduated from WEST High School. She was a journalist in China and witnessed the Communist Revolution, has written many books about China. I believe there is still something right outside of that classroom about her! She has quite a legacy, especially known in China and respected. She saved tens of thousands of Chinese people from starving to death in the 1930s. I think she was a secretary or president of the class there at West High and took a boat to China as a young girl all by herself!. That's quite the Legacy for West High. Chinese language and Spanish are the languages to learn for kids these days. It will get them much more advanced in their careers!
