Keep Chinese Language Learning Alive at West

Mandarin Chinese is a widely spoken language and is important to teach in schools to support the multicultural aspects of our students, communities, and country. This can also prove to be an incredibly valuable language to be fluent in as more and more people may need to communicate with Chinese manufacturers in the near future as tariffs make an impact on costs of goods. Lastly, Luo Laoshi (Teacher Luo) is an amazing teacher and clearly shows patience, professionalism, care, and passion in her work. Please keep the Mandarin Chinese program alive! Thank you.

Chinese has significant culture and history that youth can learn from. We need to keep this legacy and other languages alive.

The Chinese program at West High was a vital part of my high school education. I would be less culturally aware without it, and I was able to connect with my culture through it. I only had opportunities to keep Chinese in my life at home and at West. Without Chinese and Luo Laoshi at West, I likely would hardly know any Chinese today. Luo Laoshi is an inspirational and guiding light in our community, and I hope we can support both her and our Chinese program for years more. I find it incredibly irresponsible to cast aside such a vital resource for our growing minds.

Please keep mandarin as an option for students at West High - China will be a greater force in the world in our future and we need to be able to understand and interact with the culture and economy.

More serious education in high school is a good investment.

Chinese is a necessary foreign language for this generation of students.

I’m glad West has been offer diverse language options and would hate to see that disappear.

These languages are awesome and keeping them will help keep cultural identity and practices alive as well

I learned Chinese for one year at West, but in that time I was able to progress far beyond the Chinese 1 curriculum because of Luo Lao Shi’s support and the community of Chinese speakers she fostered. It’s heartbreaking to think that future West High students won’t have the same opportunity as I did.

Language learning is so important!

Lear ing a second language is an essential business skill to have. Learning a second language in high-school is a huge advantage since there is more opportunities to practice as well as at a younger age. Please keep this program at West High!

I have reason to believe this is a move designed to obey the crazy OLIGARCHY in power at the moment. This is not my America. Educate our kids! They want Chinese--give 'em Chinese.

Multi-lingual citizens give the U.S. economic security advantages on the world scene. Canceling Chinese at West High makes no sense, unless the aim is to hobble the nation’s next generation and our national interests.

Why would these classes be a problem? Speaking Chinese can help US citizens understand and appreciate the machinations of living in a global community!

American schools should offer more Chinese classes than cutting them. Today, almost every Chinese student can speak English and know America and American culture pretty well. This is a disadvantage for US.

The Chinese program at West High was one of the most meaningful parts of my high school experience. It didn’t just teach language—it opened up curiosity, global awareness, confidence in learning, exposure to school events, and some of my friendships started in that classroom, built on those shared memories. Ms Luo put so much heart into every lesson, and the immersive experience she created really stuck with me. It would be such a loss for future students not to have that same experience
