Ms. Luo was by far my favorite teacher at west. I never considered myself a language person until I had her class. She inspired me to continue my studies in Chinese and beyond. She is a beam of light in a harsh world. Cutting the Chinese program would be a huge mistake and extremely unfeeling to this wonderful woman and incredible teacher.

I think the Chinese class must continue. Every language has its charming place. The charming place of Chinese is inheritance. This is a way for people who have been trying to connect with modern people for over 5,000 years. Just like Portuguese, it has been circulating for centuries. I understand that the funding situation is no longer as good as before. You can discuss with the board of directors, campus and parents to see if there are any other solutions.

Chinese program at West High School is critical for students who wants to learn the second language, taking away Chinese 1 and 2 will directly impact the district decision for keeping Chinese in AP and IB programs. We have a big Chinese community in Salt Lake City, removing Chinese 1 and 2, and further Chinese program in AP and IB would dramatically reduce Chinese students from join the West High School.

I never took the Chinese language class at West High, but I walked past it every day with a smile, proud to be a Panther and knowing that classes like that were part of what made our school so unique. West is known for its incredible diversity—in both its students and staff—and this class has always reflected that. Everyone spoke highly of Ms. Luo, whose passion and dedication to her students left a lasting impact. She deserves to be recognized for her efforts and the legacy she’s built. West High takes pride in offering outstanding electives and extracurriculars, and this class has absolutely earned its place among them.

It’s important, especially considering what’s going on in the country right now, to teach kids about other cultures and languages. It helps combat the American arrogance that we are better than everyone and introduces new ideas, new cultures, food, and shows how beautiful other countries and cultures and languages can be, especially Chinese and other Asian cultures. Racism stems from ignorance, and cutting programs like these only feeds into it and we can not grow as a nation if future generations are being taught that nobody else matters except the USA.
