Keep Chinese Language Learning Alive at West

SLC fiscal irresponsibility should not impact the next generation’s learning.

Keep it alive!!!!

I took Chinese 1-4 and Chinese 5. They are amazing classes, and when I took them, the intro courses had solid enrollment 20-30 people. The teacher is very supportive and was one of my favorite teachers as west.

Please keep Chinese alive at west!

Keep the Chinese program at West High School

Update: I have great news! As of May 23, the Chinese program will continue at West High, with Levels 1 and 2 being offered again next year. The Luo family is deeply grateful for all the support — we couldn’t have done this without everyone’s help.

Transparency and parent involvement in curriculum decision making is of utmost importance. Cutting the Chinese program will compromise IB/AP students and future students at West, having a domino effect on the cultural makeup of our school and weaken both programs.

Critical to strengthen not weaken a program that lifts up our school in many ways

It would be a shame to lose this important program at West!

Chinese language will only get more important in the future with the competition between the US and China as two economic superpowers. The Chinese language lessons in the West are very popular as families drive a long distance to attend the West high school due to their Chinese language offering. As incoming student family, we were very disappointed to find out it was discontinued. Please keep the Chinese language program and classes for middle school.

Ms. Luo has been in integral part of my 6-year journey at West High. I’m sure there are reasons being considered for why the program should be cut, but China remains a place and culture many students are curious about and look forward to getting exposed to. Personally Mandarin class at West had been a staple, a constant I could always rely on, and a connection to my heritage that I had mostly lost. Please do reconsider cutting the program. Ms. Luo does an exceptional job teaching and inspiring her students on the Chinese culture that has developed over thousands of years.

This would be a disservice to so many students!

Learning a language helps foster understanding between cultures, which is greatly needed in our society.

As a Indigenous Native educator, community leader, Boarding School Survivor & grandmother, I know teaching our children their mother tongue is powerful. I urge you to continue to teach our children the Chinese language. My Dine' language was instrumental in world wars and is precious to me. Children are blessed knowing any language.

Please keep the language program at the school.

The only way to salvage this program is if we have the funds to do it. I talked with the assisstant principal, and he told me that funding it seprately is the option that will succeed the most. Please, find anyone you know to help donate to Mrs. Luo! Contact organizations, and find sponsers! Tell your kids, or students to request Chinese. This shows that we should keep it!

We need more world languages and cultures taught not less!

Keep West a premier location to study languages in Utah!
