Part of parenting is giving your children every advantage possible. I was so happy to be doing research on education options and have this school come up for Chinese immersion. My two very young kids will know Spanish from me, but to also know Chinese will not only make future languages easier but truly give them an advantage in their later life should they choose any sort of international career. Chinese is a very difficult language I'm not qualified to teach, this school is such a great potential resource.

I support continuation of the Gateway Elementary Chinese immersion language program. Numerous studies have established that such programs bring long-term benefits to the students, the school, and the community. My son is enrolled in this program, and our family has made many deep, lasting, and diverse friendships as a direct result.
Although I understand that there have been challenges recently with regard to expanding enrollment numbers and finding and retaining qualified staff, solutions had been identified and were in the process of being implemented - including adding a second kindergarten class to compensate for attrition, and bringing in student aides where assistance was needed.
So it was heartbreaking to learn that this program will be discontinued, without allowing any opportunity to adjust and to succeed. Please re-consider the decision to abandon this valuable program. At this critical time we should instead be redoubling our efforts, and investing in our children and our future.

Learning a second language is much easier, when children are young. This also gives them an advantage, if they decide to learn more languages in the future. Saying there aren't enough individuals, fluent in Mandarin, to teach students, is the best example, as to WHY students should learn it. I've done research involving Mandarin speaking parents of a Head Start program...we need more people to learn this language to help remove barriers to other US cultures.

In order to succeed in the 21st century today's students must be prepared to enter a a global competition for higher education and future careers. The Gateway program gives children crucial skills and positive exposure to a world of cultural difference that all our students need and deserve. Learning about other cultures at a young age helps children learn to think critically about their own culture and society and helps prepare them to make the world a better place. I urge the district to continue this worthwhile pedagogical endeavor so that my grandson and his peers may continue to reap the benefits.

I have a love and a passion for this Chinese program! If you go just one state over to Utah you will find 30 plus elementary school Immersion programs. Their curriculum comes from the State Department of Education down to the level of the teachers. We have tried to build this program starting from the teachers up. I am hoping that Idahoans can think more globally. I hope they can see the importance of this program in efforts to compete with the world market in business and education. I dream of a state that has a broader future vision for our students.
