The artwork in the halls of east campus is the most beautiful part of the school. To deface this hallway would be a travesty against the numerous alumni who dedicated their high school careers to the arts, and to those who might have been and might still be inspired to follow their passions into college and later careers in art fields. None of these murals is more or less worthy of the title "art" than any other. In reference to Principal Blakes statement, "Homer Simpson with a finger in his nose is not what I want on my high school wall,” the notion that Homer Simson, the titular character of a multimillion dollar cartoon franchise spanning three decades is somehow less worthy of memorialization in an art project than any other pop-culture icon is absurd, and this revisionism is nothing less than censorship. These are not the values we should seek to instill in the youth of McHenry County. Keep the artwork; all of it.

I was not an art student, but my sister, husband, and many friends have paintings on these walls. It would be criminal to paint over them!

Why does this need to be done? When bringing my incoming freshman into McHenry East this was one of our first stops. We have always heard about them, but when we saw them they inspired her to be a four year art student. There is no need for white walls, or having the paints stream on a TV. You can not see the contrast in the art work on a TV screen. Mr. Blake I would hope that you reconsider your position.

My son ( Michael Poulos ) has a beautiful poem that he wrote and painting ( done by another student ) on that wall, from when they attended East . That wall brought me and my new husband back together again after a decade apart when he sent me a picture of it. That wall changed our lives. Keep the wall. Save the art, it does matter, It's not just the history of it but for some like us, it gave us a future.
