Keep the murals, yes. Keep the quirks and characteristics that make McHenry East unique, yes. But most importantly, keep the hard work that 20 years' worth of students have put a countless amount of time, effort and emotion into.

Can't you take high res pics of it and convert it to a vinyl wall covering. Could keep it forever even bring it to a new building.

I was not an art student but I'm appalled and disappointed that anyone in the position of the administration would even consider painting over these pieces of art. Seen a lot of creativity and freedom taken out of this school in the past few years. East campus is a unique home to its students and this would be a horrible decision.

School is stressfull hard at times and aggravating you encourage us to learn yet you degrade our creativity of not one but many generations of students you teach us to be ourselves yet push the idea of everyone being the same the paintings are what a student did to leave their mark on the school and now you wish to just take a picture and have it play on a screen that nobody sees if the art and creativity and accomplishment isn't equal in moral value as a trophy won in wrestling then maybe the trophies and cases of awards should go as well

I have art on these walls and its the cornerstone of the art department to have the early year students see what the seniors have done and see what they can at least be able to do. I can only agree to cover the walls if they can be repainted by future students. With so many years of history it is sad that a tradition young as it may be would be stopped and the sad reality of institutional sameness will rule. Keep our youth thinking of how they can stand out in a crowd and have them work for it. How can a man or school so want to focus on removing motivation and hope from even one small section of their pupils.

The role of an education is not only learn to read and write. It is to learn how to think and in learning how to think, how to understand ourselves differently than we might otherwise. This is why we learn the scientific method, mathematical function, and literary criticism.
Along the same lines, a role of the arts is to learn a form of emotion and expression that is otherwise not accessible through other means. These murals serve as an outward demonstration of this, explaining who students are in ways that are meaningful and deep. These were not put up in the middle of the night on a whim. They were designed meaningfully and with extensive planning and painstaking execution. If the desire is to create a "professional academic environment" (NWH, 2/29/16), I can think of no better way than to display the products of that academic environment. These are a testament to MCHS as an institution of learning for all students, not just one kind of student, and while that includes the ones who paint "lifetime works" of Lennon and Einstein, it also includes those who have lifetime pursuits involving Camaros, Limp Biskit, and the imagination.

A lot of kids were honored to have a chance to paint on the wall as the final project in Art 4. I was one of those kids. Maybe some people don't think all those pieces are up to par or are the type of work they like. But a lot of time and effort was put into every single one of those pieces and just to paint over it is disrespectful. Those halls are known for the artwork, I would love to come visit just to see the new pieces that have been added since I graduated. Don't paint over them, let them live on.

As a 2014 graduate of McHenry East Campus I was shocked to hear that the art in the hallway which I had loved so much was in jeopardy of being destroyed. As an art student studying Visual Communications at Truman State University this disappoints me even more. So many students put thought and care and hard work into painting these pieces on the wall. It's 20 years of history, history of hard working students that passed through those halls and left their mark. Part of the reason I loved East is because of our paintings. Even students at West were jealous, always saying how they wanted the chance to do the same and how they wished their school would allow them to express themselves in that way. Please do not destroy 20 years of art history for the sake of professionalism. Your running a school not a company.
