Schmidt is guilty as well as he was an accomplice who choked the poor, scared dog with a snare and then knelt with all his weight on the dog's chest so Bolger could cut the dog's throat. I think all criminal cases that these two have been involved in should be examined as they obviously are out of control and dangerous. What about the other officers who just stood by? This would never have been made public had it not be captures on film by a witness. I wonder how many other horrific deeds these two did when no witness was present.

I agree...both should be charged equally and to the greatest extent possible. There was ABSOLUTELY no reason that this should have happened. If only there was "eye for an eye" justice in this country.

I bet he felt like a big man for what he did. I pray the world shows him the same cruelty that he demonstrated that day. He inflicted pain and unnecessary force and took away her life. At the very least, he deserves felony charges and to never be hired again as an officer. He has made a mockery of his police department. He was suppose to help serve and protect his community and seek justice and he did the exact opposite. I would hope his whole community turns their backs on him because there is no excuse for his behavior. He's such a disgrace and it saddens me to think there are such awful people that exist. He's a big pos. I can't imagine the pain the owner feels nor the loss. If I witnessed something like that, I'd probably end up in the back of a police cruiser because I would go after the person. :-(

This officer needs to lose his job. I groom dogs for a living and if I were to so much as hit a dog ( which I'd never do) for biting me, I would be terminated on the spot! I also want to suggest that in order to get officers to cut this dog killing crap out, changes need to take place in their work policies. Cops should never carry a rabies pole. Rabies poles are used to rescue or capture aggressive dogs out of cages or tricky small spaces. When it comes to that type of situation, that is for the people who have the job title of animal control. Police officers should have a dog safety kit and every assigned patrol car. These kits should contain tranquilizers, non-slip leads, bite gloves and an air horn. It just makes sense for police officers to have these items, especially since the deal with dogs and other animals on a daily basis. Officers need to have quarterly meeting or class on how to properly go about handling dogs and other animals from animal specialists. I'd also like to also suggest that maybe they should take psych evaluations quarterly due to their highly tramatizing and aggressive jobs. Maybe they can fit these things in with their p.t training.

There is so much that can be said concerning this situation. As a pet owner, I am appalled. The Emergency Service Unit Officers who committed this horrendous act are criminals, and should be charged as such. Found guilty, punished and fired with no pension as employees of Baltimore City. Clearly, Nala was scared, dehydrated and possibly disoriented, No citizen who calls for assistance with and animal wants to witness such acts of cruelty by the people who we entrust to help us. Unfortunately, there is a plethora of animals that need help and not enough Animal Control Officers available in our city. They are in short supply and overworked, with most putting in a lot of overtime. The hiring of quality people in this position is hard as it is a thankless often heartbreaking job. The city needs to review their policy concerning their hiring practices for ACOs. Because the job requires writing citations the candidate needs to have a clean record. Many animal loving people who would be great ACOs have been turned down because they have a record that the Police Commissioner will not look past and give a second chance. Sometimes for even expunged records. But, he does have officers that are cruel, without a doubt bullies and do cross the line, that
"protect" our citizens, their children and animals. Are you kidding me??
Please, Madam Mayor and Commissioner Batts wise up and do something! Go look over the past 6-8 months of applicants, even the ones you turned down because of their records.. Hire them, put them on a years probation, and judge them for their performance on the job! This is not fair to the good Baltimore City Officers, Pet Owners, the People who call Baltimore City home, or the people who are contemplating moving there. These officers exhibited the behavior of sadistic sociopaths. they're the last people in the world I would want "protecting" my family. They both deserve to be relieved of their duties (without merit) and tried on charges of intentional animal abuse. they should also both be banned from owning or living with animals for as long as possible. You can't tell me that this is the first time this asshole showed violent tendencies. SOMEONE,probably a lot of people knew there was a lot wrong with him and slid it under the rug. I certainly would do the public a service and report him if only I had known. I wouldn't care if he were my husband,my brother, my dad-this pervert needs to be fired. Has anyone notices that Timothy Charles Schmidt has an open/active case for exceeding the 55mph speed limit going 74mph and this JUST occurred on 5/24/14. What a guy, what a cop. I agree with all of you about an eye for an eye. If our "justice" system lets these two guys get away with this, I, along with God, will storm the gates of hell after them. What about their supervisors, the police commissioner and even the Mayor with her supposed cruelty to animals task force. I tried and tried to reach the councilwoman in charge of this, the Mayor's office and anyone else when I heard this task force was first starting with my goal to be to take my guide dog into the elementary schools (a ground level place to teach younger children the value of animals) but I guess no one wants to hear from a blind, white, surburban housewife. That's a shame. But what can we expect of our children when adults like these two idiots are on the loose and patroling our streets. The entire police department is just one corrupt "brotherhood". I pray to God His justice prevails and these and those above in administration suffer. I wonder what they are like at home with their wives and children and how they REALLY treat their own pets. This is the worst thing I have ever had to cope with in my 62 years of life and I've seen some pretty bad stuff/lived through some really bad times. We do not want any type of animal cruelty allowed. Whether it is dog fighting, neglect, or this type of vicious behavior. People and animals react from fear when lost or approached by strangers. There is no need to kill them. This dog was already restrained and did not pose a threat. If this is "official police training" then we need to re evaluate and retrain our officers.
