Mr. Long has gone out the way and has gone above and beyond for us. From emailing us back in a timely manner, to taking situations into his own hands when we have a problem, this man is the epitome of a hard worker and loyal person. He always has a smile on his face and treats us as his own. Mr. Long is that one person you can depend on.

Mr. Long goes above and beyond for all students in his role. He works tirelessly to ensure that the job gets done. Even working sometimes on the weekends. I’ve emailed him for emergent documents over the weekends and gotten a response with a quick and helpful. Please kindly reconsider his termination or transfer him into another department at your discretion. It will be a sad loss to Meharry for a talent like him to be lost. Thank you.

Mr. Long has been one of the biggest supports to students at Meharry. His work makes a huge difference, and his role has helped many students immensely. His firing is a significant disservice and loss to the students at Meharry. He should be rehired.

I am disturbed and disgusted that Mr Long was fired. He was the most helpful person in that office. As a graduate I will be speaking to my fellow alumni about this and will be reluctant to donate until this is resolved.

I’m sorry, but this is absolutely unacceptable. What’s happening here is a complete disservice to the students, alumni, and the entire Meharry community. Mr. Joseph Long has been a lifeline to so many of us — dependable, responsive, and deeply committed. He answers emails at all hours, connects you with the right people when he doesn’t have the answer, and genuinely cares. You don’t find that kind of dedication often — and you’re choosing to discard it? This man is Meharry. If you’re dissolving his position, then you owe it to this institution to create another for him. Stripping him of his role without a plan to retain his presence is not leadership — it’s disregard. Mr. Long represented the very best of Meharry — and Meharry is better with him in it.

Mr. Long has been more than just a teacher or staff member. He has been a true source of encouragement, spiritual support, and personal motivation throughout my academic journey. In my experience, Mr. Long consistently goes above and beyond what is expected. Whether it’s through his kind words, sincere prayers, or the simple act of stopping by while I study just to offer encouragement, his presence has been a constant reminder that I am not alone in my educational journey. These seemingly small gestures have had a big impact, often coming at moments when I needed reassurance the most. His commitment to students extends beyond the classroom. He takes time to see each of us as individuals, providing support not only academically but emotionally and spiritually. This kind of dedication is rare and deeply valued in any learning environment. I sincerely hope that this letter serves as a testament to Mr. Long’s meaningful contributions and the lasting impact he has had on students like myself. Please consider the importance of retaining such a dedicated and uplifting member of the faculty.

Mr. Long has always been helpful and caring. Anytime I truly have an issue that I need fixed or don’t have the answer too, he’s my go to guy. The man with the plan. It pains me to hear of his position removal as his presence and effort are integral to what makes the Meharry family special. - Keshon Jackson MS3

Mr. Long was an invaluable support to me as a medical student. Not only is his positivity infectious, he is an advocate, and adds to student moral both during and after medical school. Please don’t let him go!

Mr. Long is an amazing faculty member and truly cares about the students at Meharry. He has done so much behind the scenes for me and other students and I would not be able to be in my residency position without him. He truly has the heart for this job and should NOT be fired. He was a big a support system throughout my time at Meharry and truly think that he deserves to still be here to help other students as he did me. Mr. Long is one of the best additions that Meharry has and the spirit of Meharry would be lost without him.

I am writing to express my full support for Mr. Long, who has served as an Administrative Coordinator at our school with unwavering dedication, professionalism, and heart. Mr. Long consistently went above and beyond the scope of his role—often working evenings, weekends, and long hours to ensure students received the support they needed. He was a steady source of encouragement, compassion, and clarity, especially during the stressful residency application process. For many of us, he was the person who made the overwhelming feel possible. His presence was not just helpful—it was essential. Despite his tireless contributions, Mr. Long was underpaid and under-recognized for the critical role he played. Terminating his position would be deeply detrimental to students, particularly rising M4s who are preparing for one of the most stressful transitions in their medical education. I respectfully ask that Mr. Long’s dedication be acknowledged, and that his position be protected—not just for his sake, but for the countless students he continues to uplift and guide.
