Justice for Doug Scott

Full disclosure: I do not yet know the full story of this case but will speak to my experience with Mr. Scott as a teacher. I am definitely for due process and believe it is unfair when someone doesn't have the opportunity to properly defend him/herself. Teachers today have so many challenges in teaching this generation of high school students (not the least of which is low salaries, lack of proper equipment, and high classroom numbers). Mr. Scott makes sure his students know subject matter from the curriculum but also teaches them life skills that concern ethical dilemmas and personal responsibility. He reaches the teenage mind using a variety of techniques, some of which are entertaining and unconventional, but he never crosses the line into being inappropriate. My daughter who graduated several years ago said she appreciated Mr. Scott’s humorous and entertaining visuals, his excellent study materials that facilitated success on tests, and his way of teaching moral principles as well as biology. Using a variety of teaching techniques, Mr. Scott facilitates different learning styles, and students are more likely to process complex ideas. I know I chuckled more than once at the dinner table after hearing about some of his quirky lessons, but I never at any point felt worried or concerned that my daughter was being taught anything unsuitable or improper. I am grateful that Mr. Scott sparked my daughter’s imagination for science, and I chalk it up to his unusual way of teaching topics that might otherwise have been dry or dull. With the environment constantly under attack these days, we need compelling science instructors who capture the imagination of young minds and make them think and act with fortitude and passion. While not every teacher clicks for every student, a variety of teacher types is what makes high school memorable, interesting, and effective.

my grandson attended college park for all 4 years of high school & had mr. scott as a teacher. he says he is an incredible teacher & that all the kids love him. this seems to be a rarity these day & politics should NOT play any part in hiring or firing. please continue his employment at college park.

Parent of former students. Me, Scott is a remarkable teacher. He made science fun and interesting for both my kids! What a huge mistake College Park would make if they let this gem of an educator go!

Doug Scott is the reason I got through high school. He was open, honest, real, and motivating at every step. It is because of him that I had the confidence to go to college and continue to law school. I became an ad junct professor at Santa Clara University School of Law because I wanted to be for students what he was for me. Taking this man out of the classroom is doing a disservice to every student he could teach.

I am a previous student of Mr. Scott. I am a junior at College Park, and Mr. Scott was my freshman year Biology teacher. I heard about his credential being taken away forever. I would just like to bring to your attention how i feel about Mr. Scott. Everyday at lunch with my friends I would always start the conversation off with all of the interesting things I learned in Mr. Scott’s class that day. If Mr. Scott left teaching, college park would never be the same. Mr. Scott is the best teacher i’ve ever had and i’m sure many can agree with me when I say he is the only teacher that i’ve actually noticed to have so much passion in what he teaches. He has worked so hard to get to where he is now and he has worked at cp for a very long time now. Before I had him, I had no idea what I was interested in or what college I want to go to, but throughout the year being in his class I realized how much I love the earth I live on and how much I want to help the environment. He always told us how much he loved Humboldt University and talked so highly of it and how environmentally friendly it is and it just sounds like such a good college that now i’m going to visit there with my mom because I would love to go to college there. My life and what I want to do with it became clearer and clearer everyday I sat in his class. People take him for granted because of his “insanity” but I think that is what I need to stay awake and be more interested in the subject. We need more teachers like Mr. Scott instead of getting rid of such an amazing passionate teacher. He may not be “conventional” but i’ve noticed that the “conventional” teachers i have had put me to sleep and don’t care about how we do in class or whether we are learning or not. MDUSD has never thought about about who the people are complaining about Mr. Scott. It’s the kids who cause problems in his class and treat him like garbage everyday. A lot of kids complaining about him talk about his anger problems. That is 100% false be

Both of my sons had Mr Scott and learned a lot from him. Both went on to become professionals. He was unconventional but the majority of students did well in his classes. He could reach his students in ways that other educators could not. Mr Scott is an asset to College Park High School and to the community.

Should we look into the principals actions and not the teacher.

My daughter is a graduate of College Park, 2010, and I support Doug Scott. This is all underhanded, and stinks! Shame on MDUSD - not the first time they've pulled a fast one!
