John Abbott College: Investigate Campus Sexual Assault

If this was my daughter or niece I would not stop...can we at least protect our women and children in this country??? What year are we in..is this acceptable?

It takes a lot of strength to be open about something like this, and it will make you stronger whenever you speak up.

According article regarding this case, published in the Montreal Gazette on Aug. 4th, 2016, a physician who examined the victim soon after concluded there were "bruises on face and neck" and "ecchymosis"(welt) on her neck. These injuries are consistent with and corroborative of the alleged assault. To simply end the investigation and dismiss the allegation on the basis of the footage alone, which preceded the event, appears entirely premature and unjust. If, in fact, the video shows something contradictory, then it should be for a judge and/or jury to examine in contrast to the physical evidence and sworn affidavits. On the other hand, I understand the authorities' position who maintain an investigative discretion. According to statistics, only a fraction of assaults are reported and an even smaller fraction make it to trial, let alone obtain a successful prosecution of the offender(s). This suggests a high degree of difficulty in prosecuting these sex crimes and explains why investigators may dismiss allegations, especially in light of conflicting evidence. But this approach is insufficient, unrealistic, and the reason why we require a trial to deliberate and decide over the facts of the case. It took tremendous courage on the part of the victim to overcome the trauma of the alleged event and report it to the police. It's seems only fair the authorities, including John Abbott College, to conduct a more rigorous investigation rather than just relying on the video, which did not record the alleged assault which took place in the men's bathroom. This case is complicated and indicative of the problems involved in the pursuit of Justice for these crimes. Part of the solution may lie in improving legislation, part of it in reforming the Criminal Justice System. Please help people feel safe on campus!!!

Psychologists need to explain to the public why women respond as they do i.e. not as we expect they should.. And women need to change their beliefs and habits to fit today's societal changes to protect themselves. BIG AWARENESS CAMPAIGN NEEDED GLOBALLY!

As an ex-JAC student, I would like to see this case get more investigation.

This case needs more investigation. The victim needs some closure and to know that she is not alone.

The case needs to be reopened and thoroughly investigated.

I cannot believe that for a police academy college that you underbrushed this student`s complaint...it should have been scrutinized better than this!

That the same policewoman who didn't follow up on a domestic violence leading to murder case - would be believed in her 'diagnosis' of this case, instead of the victim's own physical and psychological injuries, is an indictment of the attitude of the Police force and the College in not taking sexual agression seriously - and ultimately taking the side of the perpetrator.

I cannot believe the people at John Abbot are not doing anything. By ignoring this it tells people that nobody will do anything in the future if this happens again. Just the fact that she is saying this happened means she didn't enjoy it. John Abbott seems to have really gone downhill since my graduation only a few years ago.

Shame on the police. Shame on the man.

Make the world save for survivors to come forward

The notions of consent should be clear to police. I suspect it is and, in this particular case, it was arranged so that the perpetrator escapes punishement. This, in my theory, is most likely related to the program he is enrolled in. Ask yourself, what program at Abbott would incline a policeman to do something like that.

JAC's conduct in this matter has been inexcusable, shameful., and irresponsible.
