I've known Jimmy for a very long time. Played against him summer league softball and winter league basketball. He comes from a great family as I know his mother, brother, and other relatives. Great guy and always is a pleasure to be around.

This is absurd. If Southern is a truly Christian institution, it will do something to help this man.

This guy does not deserve to have his life ruined. Please let him go!

They blew that lockdown totally out of proportion!

Please give this guy a break he has been through enough. Find a real criminal!

It is so hard to know now days who is serious and who isn't. It is also difficult to learn that words have meaning and that some jokes aren't funny. But it seems to me community service would be punishment enough. A felony charge and/or conviction could really hurt this young man's whole life. Not only would community service be a continual reminder to watch his tounge, it would help others. And it wouldn't be a drain on tax payer's money.

And just who is "Kisha Caldwell" that she can reak havok on someone elses life by one simple phone call? And "her word against his". She asked him if he had done all he could to get his transcript. And of course she was so scared by his respose, Chatt State school security was notified at once and they secured their campus and detained him - NOT

We got you, Jimmy. We all thought the whole thing was dumb anyway!

This man is working hard to make something of himself. You have citizens at town hall meetings in Alabama taking about wanting our president to be executed, and this young man trying his hardest to make something of himself for the better gets demonized by our law enforcement officials. We should all petition for this man's freedom, against any incarceration sentencing.

We all need to look at everything with a level eye, balanced approach, and common sense. Three years for does not fit the situation where an off-hand remark that he immediately realized was wrong and corrected. Perhaps Community Service or even PSA announcements, etc. might be a better approach for someone with no prior record, and who is working hard to better his life and others lives, and the suggested punishment would be a better approach that would better other peoples lives while learning from his mistake.

No one needs to be arrested for this.

This is a misunderstanding. No one was harmed, it was an exaggerated statement that we ALL make from time to time. But not something worth serving 3 years in jail for.

Maybe this petition will bring one of our Universities to its knees on their extreme inefficiencies. It almost sounds like government beauracracy. Southern needs to drop the charges on this young man and give him the benefit of the doubt. Everybody makes mistakes!

He definitely shouldn't have been making suicide and bomb "jokes", but I agree that three years in jail is quite unnecessary for a false alarm.

This is truely an injustice. I can empathize with his frustration getting his transcripts. I was a graduate of Southern. My family and I paid full tuition for 4 years (other than a very tiny music scholarship) and when I went to get a transcript for a very good job opportunity they tried to tell me they weren't sure they could get it for me in time. I needed it right away for this job and did end up doing it for me because I insisted, but never-the-less, that department could work on its customer service. I think that's the least they could do when tuition rates are as high as they are.
