The demolition plans for Jhoops are off the table. The Durgapur Municipal Corporation finally backed down because they could not ignore the pressure we kept on them. We won this fight for our community but we will keep watching to make sure they do not try this again.

Dear Sir,
Jhoops is a collective name for the eating places near the main gates of National Institute of Technology Durgapur (NITD) in West Bengal, India. They serve food to the students, staffs and visitors of the institute. Apart from that, they have been serving as a meeting place where students from all departments and levels gather for conversations, planning and casual hangout.
It has been reported that the Durgapur Municipal Corporation (DMC) is planning to demolish Jhoops in order to expand the width of the road passing in-front of the institute. We, the current students, alumni and the well-wishers of NITD are saddened by this news. We would like to request the institute and the municipal authorities to reconsider their decision.
There have always been various complaints about the unsatisfactory quality of food in the dormitory mess and institute canteens. Because of that a lot of people prefer to have food at Jhoops where they can ask for food items of their choice at almost any time of the day. Jhoops has been a legacy for all the students associated with NITD and many of their memories with the institute are associated with it. Generations of students have eaten at Jhoops and alumni yearn to go back to Durgapur to have a good time there, along with the food and conversation.
Compared to the eating places in City Center which are both relatively far and expensive, Jhoops has maintained a tradition of economic and quality food at a convenient location. Moreover, a lot of students get the facility of eating-on-credit at Jhoops, due to which they don't have to stay starved just because they don't have enough money at the required time.
Jhoops should not be demolished, but instead be protected and taken care of. Better facilities, quality control, hygiene and infrastructure should be developed so that Jhoops continue being the favorite place for people at NITD. We are submitting this petition to the Director of NIT Durgapur, requesting him to take necessary steps to save Jhoops. Better alternatives to demolishing Jhoops would be shifting them to some convenient location, like inside the institute premises.

The Durgapur Municipal Corporation thinks they can just bulldoze our history while we watch from the sidelines. We are creeping toward 100 signatures but we need to ramp up the noise right now to prove they cannot ignore us. Put this link on every social media feed you have and force them to pay attention.

Why must they always target our favorite spots? Leave jhoops alone!
Please dont demolish it. Its the only place we can all sit and have a decent meal together.
Jhoops is literally the heart of the campus. You cannot just destroy it like that for a road widening project. Think about the students.
Too many memories there. Spent 4 years hanging out at jhoops, it would be a huge loss for us all.
SERIOUSLY?? Jhoops is iconic. The administration better speak up for us for once.
