The school board confirmed today that the stadium will finally carry Jay Lunceford's name. It has been an exhausting road to get here but I am relieved that we finally gave him the honor he earned. Thank you for staying with me through the long silence and the pushback.

This petition is to keep freeman field as is, but to name the stadium after the late Jay Lunceford. Who is the only Head Coach to take the Mauldin High School Mavericks Football team to a undefeated regular season. This has been LONG OVERDUE. So if all the alumni of Mauldin agrees with this petition please sign it.

We hit two hundred fifty signatures today. It is exhausting work to keep pushing for this recognition but seeing these names makes me believe we might actually get Jay Lunceford the honor he earned.

I know Mauldin has “Freeman Field”, but many institutions have named their complex’s-for example: Freeman Field at Jay Lunceford Stadium. Florida State University does this with their Stadium.
I am signing the petition, but also want to respect Mr. Freeman name as well. Maybe we can figure out a way to honor both men.
He is my grandfather, so it would mean a lot to my family if this goes through!
I'm probably the most prejudiced person to sign this but I believe it would be a fitting tribute to a man who gave everything he could to Mauldin High, his athletes and students and to his friends in the community.
I think he deserves to have the football field named after him. He is what the Mavericks were all about play as a team, hard work, never give up among other things.
I used to use that payphone right beside his office to call my sponsor.(only the people from the home will know what that is) I saw him that Monday morning. He knew I was Barney's sister and he was ALWAYS very nice to me. If the bell rang he would offer me a pass to class. And I got a few. I also remember the line of car going to the graveside. There was one part of the journey on a hilltop. I looked to the front of me. There were so many cars I couldn't see the hearse. I looked to the back. Miles and miles of cars, could not make out the end they were so small. I had deep feelings for him. It was those few teachers that showed love to a group of kids that really needed it. (COG Home) By doing that he showed great leadership in how to care for less fortunate kids. And what was just as good was Miss Koon supported the home and her staff in showing great care for us while we were there.
I worked with Jay and can share his dedication to young people!

It was a tremendous blessing and privilege to have played for coach Lunceford on his first Mauldin football team in 1974. He was a very special man.
