The committee finally acknowledged that disability is a natural part of human existence and reversed their discriminatory policy. This long battle for basic recognition is over because 712 people refused to look away. We won this, but I will be watching closely to ensure they keep their word.
Disability is a natural part of the human condition. People with
disabilities come from all walks of life, in all colors, sizes, genders
and ages. Those of us living with disabilities bring something to the
table whether it is fresh perspective, political savviness, indomitable
spirit, energizing presence, bold intellect, etc. We contribute to
society BECAUSE of who are. Human difference and diversity enriches
community. Disability is not special; it's just a part of life.
Seeing five hundred names on this page feels like a heavy weight lifting off my chest because I spent years feeling like my own story was being ignored. Knowing that so many of you see the truth in these words makes me feel less alone in this fight for basic recognition.

I have spent this week reading through the comments you all left and I am overwhelmed by the strength in these stories. This work is difficult but your words prove that we are right to insist that disability is simply a part of life.

About time someone said it. Just let us exist without all the weird looks and assumptions.

My son has CP and he contributes more to his school than any other kid there. Disability is just part of his life not his whole story.

Exactly. We are just people living our lives. Tired of being treated like we are invisible or just some tragedy.
