Stop the Revival of Iroquois Beer

The name is problematic in many ways. The brewers seem to be going for something with significance to the Buffalo area, so here are a couple other suggestions: Canalside (for the Erie Canal), or Builders Beer (for the Buffalo architecture)

Given the devastation alcoholism has wrought upon indigenous communities, pick a different name. I'll never drink Iroquois Beer, but I'd check it out of it was called something else.

It's amazing that in the 21st century any business in the heart of Haudenosaunee traditional lands could be so insensitive to, not only the appropriation of a Native American tribal name, but also the centuries-long destructive effects that alcoholic beverages have had on our people.

Community Beer Works normally has a great track record with supporting equality and social justice. I'm disappointed at this awful decision and lack of respect for indigenous cultures.

Haven’t we taken enough from these good people? Must we also take the name universally recognized as theirs? To brand an alcoholic drink??

The name Iroquois on a bottle of beer, or in reference to promoting beer is most disrespectful. Any person that has any respect, honor, care, or dignity would not even consider doing such a thing. It’s past time to stop the disrespect and genocide on our people. To do anything with reference to Indigenous Peoples, Indigenous Elders should be consulted first.

Whatever the intent, this is not something that after being addressed, can be ignored. This is something that needs to be addressed, and I would hope that Community Beer Works would show respect and apologize for perpetuating institutional racism, in the form of denigrating a people and culture- for the sake of profit. It wasn't ok when it was done back then, and I'm not ok with the new spin they are putting on it-to try and make it seem socially acceptable. Growing up in an area with a large Haudenosaunee presence, it shocked me to see this brewery be so blind to how offensive this is. I hope the company addresses this with some self reflection- and goes a step further and really educates themselves on why this is so appalling.

Respect is not gained by a meme. We have earned Respect in our land.

Native Americans have been used by the white capitalist system via marketing, poisoning from aluminum mines and smallpox. Stop this stuff!
