It is necessary for the Irish community in Chile to have an Irish Embassy or Consulate. We need one now.

"Magallanes" The last word heard through the fog of Bernardo O'Higgins' dying gasps. The son of Sligonian exile Ambrose and the father of the first Latin American country to throw off the shackles of colonialism. Look at Chile on the map. I am dead centre between Arica and its southern extreme of Polo Sur. The Magellan Straits is where Gondwana became America. Cabo Froward is where the omphalus of all life was cut as the continents divided. Here is grace. Here is majesty. Here is inspiration in every breath of mammal and every swirl of sea. It just does not stop here. Nor will I. NOR WILL I. Plans have changed I am joining Watch Captain from the Whitbread winning Flyer (1977) Simon Willis as his sole crew member on the Sagitta as we tease through the Beagle Channel, around Cape Horn, Ushuaia, Islas de los Estados, the Malvinas islands before pushing up to Río de la Plata Montevideo, Buenos Aires and maybe some of the Brazil. I am Socrates' apprentice and I will be out of touch for a while. I am leaving the continent and won't be back til August. I am going. Tomorrow I am gone. Simon has not lost a man overboard in 50 years and I will keep myself safe but in case the worst ever happens nobody should ever be sad for me. I have seen life at its best and am glad that I have had the chance to share part of it with each of you. The sea. The sea. Only the sea and then wonderful surprises who pop their heads up each day. Tomorrow I leave Punta Arenas for Porvenir, Tierra Del Fuego. Porvenir... what is to come.
