The work that Dr. Kim has done at Vassar - and the degree to which she has served as an advocate and vocal speaker about the significance of medieval history - is beyond measure. She is a scholar of vital significance and I refuse to stand by idly as she is attacked.

The personal attacks launched against professor Kim is unacceptable. Her work studying and confronting the shameful legacy of racism in medieval studies as well as the current appropriation of medieval symbols and stories by white supremacists today is key to advance social justice and intellectual democracy. Her attacker, Rachel Fulton Brown, a Chicago University professor who is an active participant in white supremacist circles, has been widely condemned by medievalists both because of her racism and lack of any historical evidence or accuracy. Because of the association of Brown with white supremacy, she attracted the attention of Milo Yiannopoulos and his followers, a group known for targeted harassment campaigns. This is a disparaging situation and anyone who believes in democracy, justice, and the value of academic work must oppose it.

RFB should consider that tenure does not shield a so-called scholar from public ridicule and loss of reputation. UC students have a right to know about her racism when they are considering classes.

I strongly oppose the white supremacist treatment of Dr Dorothy Kim. This kind of behaviour needs to be eradicated from academia. Universities should take such despicable treatment seriously and deal with it accordingly.

Having attended the University of Chicago, I can only say that I would not see such unprofessional and lowly behavior from an academic employed, much less tenured, at that institution. Dr. Kim, while a junior in the field, is a responsible and respected contributor to the field of medieval studies. Dr. Brown has become an embarrassment to the field and the University of Chicago through her own actions.

It is anyone's guess why Fulton Brown would lash out against Kim's work, but the consequences of such are undeniable. Kim is now the target of a harassment campaign while Fulton Brown enjoys the attention of campaign provocateurs (even if she is joking about Milo Yiannopoulos's endorsement, this kind of commentary is only funny to someone who either condones his actions or who is without any idea of who he is and what he stands for). Without even engaging with the ideas and explicit content of Kim's work, Fulton Brown has set a standard for professional engagement that should not be condoned or tolerated within any academic community.

Speaking as a person of color, this is an issue that needs to be discussed openly. Attacking a colleague in such fashion is rude, unprofessional and offensive. Dorothy Kim deserves an apology and a statement of support from her institution.
