IPPS statement in support of Dorothy Kim

Once upon a time, history was told only in the context of "great men" — literally, in the context of male rulers, with the occasional queen thrown in. Then, scholars with temerity began to address the history of the "everyman" — the common man. Then so-called uppity women began to look at the experience of women. Now, scholars are examining history from the lens of those marginalized even further. I support Dorothy Kim's scholarship, her unveiling of the cloudy layers of privilege that have made the experiences of some people invisible. Keep digging, scholars; some of us want an unvarnished look at the human story.

You must fire Fulton Brown. His actions have shown him to be a dangerous, violent member of your university. You need to understand that his actions reflect the ideals of your institution. You need to ask yourselves if these are the actions that your university wants to sanction. You should immediately release a public apology to Dorothy Kim, and you should--in the same breath--fire Fulton Brown. Show the world that Vassar does not approve of violence against POC.

I write in support for Dr. Dorothy Kim's work. I am both saddened and applauded that issues of race cannot be recognized as part of medieval studies.

As a psychologist and current PhD student, and a black woman, knowing that this is going on in institutions I look up to is worrying.

Dorothy Kim is a fine scholar. I rebuke this horrible attack on her body of work.

I support Dorothy Kim and her work and writings, along with her professional criticism of the ideologies expressed in Rachel Fulton Brown's public blog. In her recent responses, Prof. Brown has not only misrepresented and mocked Prof Kim in ways that redound embarrassingly back on herself, but played the "ad hominem" card, which shows a fundamental lack of logic and professionalism.

Agree or disagree with another scholar, it is always unprofessional to launch a personal attack and doubly so when one abuses one's rank and one's connections to scurrilous hate mongers to make that attack truly threatening to another's personal and professional well-being

It is unacceptable for anyone, especially someone in Prof Fulton Brown's position, to wilfully put another person in danger. As an elected academic union (UCU) representative and historian, I stand in solidarity with Dorothy Kim.

Professor Rachel Fulton Brown is an embarrassment to the academic world. Her recent writings clearly represent a fundamental lack in her education.

There is no place for racism in academia and everyone should take a stand against it.

There is no excuse for disgraceful behavior like this. This scholar's hate mongering should have been shut down a long time ago. It's long past due for U of Chicago to intervene.

Dorothy is a wonderfully generous scholar. I wholeheartedly support her and this petition.
