We cannot tolerate racism and bigotry in our institutions of higher education. Faculty should not be silenced by means of threats of violence and racist denigration. Fulton Brown is destroying the heart of our disciplines with her insistence on using threats to silence those who disagree with her.

Disagreeing with a colleague's approach or interpretation is a valuable part of the intellectual discussion that is scholarship and the creation of knowledge. Attacking someone for their race/gender/sexual orientation or for any other personal aspect of their being represents a complete intellectual failure and is beneath the dignity of even an undergraduate scholar. Sadly, those who feel threatened often resort to such pathetic attacks the attempt to challenge scholars to whom they feel inferior. Fulton Brown should just admit her inferiority and apologize to Dr. Kim. Dr. Kim, continue your good work.

Academic freedom doesn't include the right to harass, demean, or threaten one's colleagues, or to treat them with public scorn and incivility. Such behavior is both unprofessional and unethical.
