IPPS statement in support of Dorothy Kim

I am proud to sign this and to support their excellent work.

Associate Professor, SUNY Potsdam I support Dr. Kim and her important work against white supremacist appropriation of the Middle Ages. Dr. Brown's behavior is appalling, unprofessional, and fundamentally unethical.

I support Professor Dorothy Kim and condemn the harassment of untenured faculty of color and the intentional doxing and dangers she and her family have been exposed to.

I support Dorothy Kim against hate and online harrassment.

I support and value Dr. Kim's work, and I strongly condemn Dr. Brown's abusive public bullying. It is disgraceful to use the "safety" of a tenured position to harass a junior colleague.

I am co-signing as a Vassar graduate ('90) who is deeply grateful for the freedoms and the protections Vassar administration provided to my professors, and as a non-academic who is fortunate to count historians, medievalists, anthropologists and academics across a wide range of disciplines among my circle of friends.

As a scholar in early modern studies, I support the valuable work of Dr. Kim and the Medievalists of Color collective in drawing attention to the long and complex history of systemic racism and its many damaging consequences today (including this attack on Dr. Kim). I hope petitions such as this one will help build broad support for ongoing efforts to address these harmful impacts in new ways.

As a scholar of Anglo-Saxon England, I support Dorothy Kim. Her work deserves the professional courtesy of civil and thoughtful engagement, especially from senior scholars. And it most certainly deserves that bare minimum of professional ethics: refraining from actions that deliberately place one's interlocutors in harm's way.

We will not stand for racism and hateful abuse of our colleague. Institutions of scholarship MUST take a stand against intolerance and hatred. If not in academia, then where will we find equality and social justice?

I support Dorothy Kim and her academic speech. I deplore tactics that endeavour to limit her speech and that threaten her safety.

As someone who teaches rhetoric, ancient and modern, I'm dismayed by the fact that an academic attacked Dr. Kim in this way. Dr. Brown's rhetoric, particularly posting an image of Dr. Kim, is horribly irresponsible, ethically and rhetorically.

As a South African scholar, I have personal experience of the damage that racist thinking causes both to scholarship and society as a whole. I strongly condemn the attack on Dorothy Kim, whose scholarship is above reproach.

As a historian of late antiquity at the University of Virginia, I support Dorothy Kim against online harassment and abuse.

The public sphere, while necessarily open to ugly and even demeaning speech and publication, must be free from imminent physical dangers. Fulton Brown has moved into creating imminent physical and material dangers

Academic discourse values diversity of opinion but professional ethics require us to make every effort to keep disagreements about ideas from putting others at risk of physical harm.
