I thought that if you were drinking and driving it was against the law. 2 people lost their lives and their family lost someone they love. Something stinks

This family deserves justice to be done for the loss of their family members. Whether they are Amish or not their lives mattered.

If he did it this time he will do it again!! He drove drunk, regardless of the visibility he should not have been behind the wheel of any vehicl . He should be punished!!!

we are sending the wrong msg about drunk driving. he needs to be charged with killing a father and son, would it be any different if he hit them walking down the road??

How can anyone determine this individuals ability at that back level? If he was sober this would be a different case.

If he had hit another car instead of a wagon then what? He was in the wrong. He needs to deal with the consequences of his poor actions.

Drunk drivers need to pay for the consequences of their acts. Being sorry is not enough.

I find this very wrong, the guy kills 2 people and gets a slap on the wrist, while other people do way less crimes and gets prison time, just don't make sense to me

How unfair! Two lives have been lost but all you have to do is "pay" to get a lesser charge. Or in this case, a slap on the hand.

The argument is speculative. There is no way to know he would have hit the van whether he was drinking or not. However, it is a proven fact that alcohol impairs your judgement, and an elevated BAC was discovered at the time of the crash. It is a fact that he hit the van while driving drunk. He had the choice to drink and drive or call a cab or find a ride home with a sober person. Nelson intentionally drove illegally, killed two people in the process, and he should face murder charges because of it.

I get an owi for jus sitting in a vehicle with 2 flat tires and he gets essentially a slap on the wrist for killing 2 people?! Accident or not it's bullsh**!

Carmen, They were NOT in a black buggy... They were on a HAY WAGON, which is much bigger than buggy... English farmers pull hay wagons and also have no lights on the back. Only slow moving vehicle triangle, which was also on this one too!

If the only argument to let him off with nothing is that due to a poorly lit buggy, he would have seen the buggy sober and thus isn't responsible... it is weak at best. People constantly comment about encountering Amish buggies that only have the orange triangles and their complaint isn't oh my God I hit them tonight. It's I ALMOST hit them. They are SOBER. Thus they are able to respond in time, swerve, etc. We all understand being drunk and impairing our responses on the road. You don't see or respond to normally what you do sober. You don't swerve at that last crucial moment as you otherwise would. Or even perhaps see them up ahead in plenty of time without needing to serve because your highbeams were on and picked the buggy up in due time. But he was drunk and he lost those abilities. He didn't have those crucial reflexes that allowed him to see what he needed to in time. He was on the road drunk and like it or not two people died as a result. Our justice system is prosecuting drunk drivers everyday that drove drunk with their friends and ultimately crashed and killed their friends. All in the car chose to be their. But the driver still has to pay that price. This person killed 2 innocent strangers. Why is he not paying that consequence???
