UPDATE:

4/28/16

Thank you to everyone who signed our online petition and thank you to those who signed our hard-copy petition. We were able to gather a total of more than 800 signatures!

We are happy to announce that after a year of collective efforts we were able to accomplish our first goal. Campus Kitchen, one of SMC's cafeteria vendors, has implemented more plant-based options on their lunch menu! Which means you now have more options(making it easier to choose a sustainable diet)!!!

Our next goal, is to get you to support Campus Kitchen and show them that we are serious about supporting businesses who listen to their customers and care about our environment. So next time you want to grab a bite to eat on campus check out Campus Kitchen (right across the cafeteria coffee shop) and let them know you are their for their plant-based options :)

Thank you to all our supporters.

P.S.

We are already working on our third goal, which is to bring Samosa House (a local, veg-friendly Indian restaurant) into our campus cafeteria. We want SMC to offer even more plant-based food options so let's let it be known that Samosa House is who we want. Sign our new petition to support the cause:

On the behalf of the students of Santa Monica College and all supporters, in allegiance with SMC's Corsairs for Animal Rights & Ethics (CARE) Club, we petition for more plant-based food options to be introduced into our SMC campus cafeteria.

A plant-based diet is based on whole plants and usually consists of whole grains, fruit, vegetables, and legumes without any animal products.

Today, the cafeteria offers very few options for those who want to avoid animal products. Please join us in our efforts to make all individuals, no matter what diet, feel welcomed to enjoy our SMC cafeteria options.

Consuming less animal products is the healthier choice which is why giving students and the campus community the opportunity to choose a plant-based option is important.

To have plant-based options added to our current menus would bring about a number of benefits that would affect:

Environmental Sustainability

"Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean dead zones, and virtually every other environmental ill." -Cowspiracy

Consumer Health

"It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes."

Vendor costs and profits

Purchasing more plant-based food options in bulk can actually cost less for our cafeteria vendors to purchase which means they nor YOU will have to pay more for healthier food choices.

Please help support our cause. CARE Club will bring all the resources to the table we just need your support to show our administration and decision-makers that this is what we want! Let's work together to further establish SMC as the sustainable campus we thrive to be.
