DID YOU KNOW THAT OUR ELECTED JEFFERSON PARISH OFFICIALS DON'T REQUIRE INSURANCE TO HAVE AN ELECTRICAL, AIR CONDITIONING OR PLUMBING LICENSE ?

DID YOU KNOW THAT A COMPANY YOU CALL OUT OF THE PHONE BOOK MAY NOT HAVE INSURANCE AND COULD COST YOU YOUR LIFE SAVINGS?

This petition has been an on going battle for well over ten years against the contractors with insurance and the ones without it.

The following are examples of why Jefferson Parish should follow the lead of other parishes whom seem to understand the importance of insurance.

EX.# 1 : Your mother calls John Doe and his helper to perform work her house. John's helper falls and breaks his leg. John Doe does not have workmans compensation. "OH NO!!" Well assuming your mother has a homeowners policy; without exclusions from hiring uninsured contractors, then her home owners will pay x amount of dollars. Any amounts exceeding her coverage will be left up to her to pay. Now what? Well John's helper gets a money judgement against her and she will be liable for the balance. If she works, it may be garnished out of her wages. If she is receiving any type of benefits, it may be garnished out of that. If she has any IRA's, Savings Accounts, Life Insurance, or anything a good attorney can track down ; guess what ?, John's helper will eventually get it; even when the house is sold ( even when - God Forbid she passes away ). Well I hope you get the picture and agree this should be LAW!.

I AM AGREEMENT THAT ANY ELECTRICAL, AIR CONDITIONING OR PLUMBING CONTRACTOR, MUST CARRY WORKMANS COMPENSATION AND GENERAL LIABILITY INSURANCE IN ORDER TO PERFORM WORK ON ANY STRUCTURE IN JEFFERSON PARISH. EXCEPTION #1) A GENERAL CONTRACTOR WITH WORKMANS COMPENSATION AND GENERAL LIABILITY INSURANCE, SIGNS AN AFFIDAVIT AGREEING THAT HE OR SHE ADDS UNINSURED TO HIS OR HER POLICY AND SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY INJURIES OR DAMAGES TO PROPERTY OR PERSONS WHILE
WORKING ON SPECIFIC JOB.

IF YOU AGREE WITH THIS PETITION AND WANT TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND LOVE ONES FROM THE POTENTIAL DANGERS OF DOING BUSINESS WITH UNINSURED CONTRACTORS AND THE ONGOING DAMAGE FROM "HURRICANE KATRINA'S AFTERMATH", VOICE YOUR OPINION AND JOIN THE FIGHT.
