This case is tragically wrong. Daniel's commitment to the psychiatric ward is evidence of his lack of intent to cause harm. If individuals have to worry about felony charges for activity while under psychiatric care, how can individuals or families trust the caretakers? Our criminal justice system is seriously flawed and is destroying the lives of addicts, those with other medical disabilities and the families of all involved. Please spare Daniel and his family the pain of incarceration and allow him to get the help he needs!

I work in a hospital, a regular general hospital, and get hit, spit at, and called fowl names. I've also been bit and had my hair pulled. I wouls have never even thought of bringing these people up on charges, and this young man has a mental illness and that's why he was in the hospital. These workers should be trained for such thing. Bringing him up on charges is outrageous.

My son had a bright future. He learned quickly and was very normal. At 19 I started to see a change in him. Depression, anxiety, and difficulty remembering or carrying out orders, He has been diagnosed with szichophrenia. With medication he is better but the psychosis can be bad at times. He has addiction problems and is due to go to a dual diagnosis center for help. I hope qualified personnel will be able to help him. I believe the mental illness made it impossible for him to free himself of the addiction on his own. I suffer, the whole family suffers as we watch him struggle. I will do anything to fight for their rights.

My 25 year old son is an addict. He has been in jail in the hospital and almost died because of his addiction. People that suffer from this often are misunderstood and locked up or shunned because of their disease. Mental illness is a disease! Addiction is a disease. Believe the people who have lived through and don't even think you can begin to understand what it does to the person who suffers from it and their families. I have used all my resources getting him help. Daniel sounds like he needs medical care and not incarceration. Please help him get the help he needs to live a normal life. My so. Too had said those words..:Mom I just want to be normal....

So many addicts start out because they are trying to medicate their bipolar issues. We have gone down this path also. My heart goes out to those.

This mother knows from 20-years with a now-adult offspring that dual-diagnosis is a two-headed dragon. If mental illness doesn't eat you alive, addiction can, and both will if left untreated. Let us regard them as the diseases they are! TREATMENT NOT INCARCERATION!
