But a university has no obligation to allow for the free expression of hate and the singling out of one group of people as targets of hate. Do you share a similar passion for the oppressed in other Middle Eastern countries?

Thanks for illuminating the blatant hypocrisy found in organizations such as the ASA, which to me has become nothing more than a hate group.

The ASA resolution stands for academic freedom for ALL. It is a boycott on institutions that deny academic and other freedoms to Palestinians. The decision to boycott was made democratically, with two-thirds of ASA membership voting on the resolution. By contrast, the stunning response of IU's and Purdue's presidents to the ASA boycott is entirely undemocratic, taken without consultation of the faculty. Out of support for my colleagues who have bravely taken a stand for human rights, I will be making my contribution to the ASA and urging others to sign this petition.

Boycotts should not be resolved with further boycotts. University Presidents have been expressing their positions without proper consultation with their faculty. We must respect ASA's democratic discussion and vote on this resolution, and faculty shold decide individually if they want to belong to ASA. THe BDS campaign has been around since 2004, and academic associations constantly boycott cities and countries based on political and social issues, and university presidents have not intervened in these boycotts before. This intervention now is simply capricious. Many university presidents are reacting to ASA's boycott without being properly informed.

i urge Presidents McRobbie and Daniels to follow the example of President Eisgruber of Princeton University: At least one college president, however, has publicly resisted calls to crack down on the A.S.A. Christopher L. Eisgruber, president of Princeton University, has responded to alumni inquiries about the boycott with a letter saying he opposes it but does “not intend to denounce the A.S.A., make it unwelcome on campus or inhibit the ability of faculty members to affiliate with it.” The better approach, he said, is to engage with the association and hope “more thoughtful and reasonable members will eventually bring the organization to its senses.”
