I, the undersigned, support increasing security at Souhegan’s entrance to the Welcome Center. This security increase will include locking the doors to the Welcome Center entrance and a policy where students and faculty carry their ID cards and badges to enter to the school. Currently, the main entrance of Souhegan is open during school hours for easy access to the school. However, is this really beneficial for our safety? Although it is easy for students and staff to gain entry to Souhegan, anyone could potentially walk in the school looking to harm people.

According to Steven P. Bucci, an expert on cyber security and defense support to civil authorities, if doors are locked and entrances are secured, there is less likely a chance a harmful intruder will get in. It is too easy for anyone to just walk in the doors of our nation’s schools. There have been two hundred eighty eight school shootings since 2009, according to CNN news. This new policy will help lessen the chances people will be harmed in the event a school shooting takes place.

Parents want their children to be safe, especially when they are not with them. Students should also not have to worry about their safety at school; however, if we establish this policy, it will secure our school and students will not have to worry. It is worth the money to install more security at the main entrance if it means making our school a safer learning environment.
