Hello everyone,

We started a petition to ask for an increase in our stipend amount. The salaries are very low compared to our current costs. Some departments are worse than others! They only pay 19k per year. with rents being so high, most people spend 80% of their budget on rent! It has almost become impossible to live. graduate students needs to be comfortable enough to focus on their work and not constantly worry about making it until the end of the month. Please sign and spread the word.

Updates

The volume of support has reached a level that allows us to request a formal meeting with the graduate dean. I am currently drafting a letter that outlines our specific budget grievances for official review by the administration.

As a GTA I definitely worked more than 40 hours most weeks, and I was only able to support myself in grad school by taking out excessive student loans, even with the tuition waivers every semester. This shouldn’t have to be the norm.

The inflation is high but core inflation that affects the lower income individuals is much higher. Rent and gas expenses makes more than half of our expenditure and we all know both of them skyrocketed after covid and recent political developments in the world.

My girlfriend is a PhD graduate student and she is the hardest working person I know. The workload and stress that she experiences is far greater than the monetary compensation she receives. I wish to pursue a PhD of my own one day and contribute to my respective field of study, and knowing how little the institutions seem to value the work and dedication of graduate students dissuades me. It is borderline criminal.

Just a gentle reminder that even if getting a second job sounds like a viable option, most international graduate students in the US are not allowed to work outside the 20hrs they are locked into by the university.

The current stipend situation at UCF was unsustainable prior to recent inflation. It is not appropriate for UCF to continue to provide an inadequate wage for its graduate students.

With the current salary of Graduate Research and Teaching assignments of UCF it is almost impossible to rent an apartment near UCF on your own. As a big number of graduate students are married and a good number also have kids, it’s very tough to share the apartment with other roommate(s).

I agree that we need a raise in stipend.
