Sign IDA's Petition on Proposed DSM-5 Criteria for Learning Disabilities
In the latest round of theproposedrevisions fortheDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) by the AmericanPsychiatricAssociation, "Learning Disorder has been changed toSpecificLearning Disorder and the previous types of Learning Disorder (Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and Disorder of Written Expression) no longer are being recommended." (See May 2012 issue of the eXaminer for further information.)
The Board of Directors of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) on May 29, 2012 approved the IDA ScientificAdvisory Board position statement, "Diagnosis and Treatment of Dyslexia: Comments on Proposed DSM-5 Criteria for Learning Disabilities (Disorders)." This position statement reflects the great concern of our members regarding the deletion of the term dyslexia under the diagnostic category ofSpecificLearningDisorder in the most recentdraftof the DSM-5. Therefore, the Board strongly encourages IDA members andothersto sign a petition based on IDA's position statement that urgently requests the following:
a) reinstatement of the term dyslexia as the appropriate name forphonologically-based, development readingdisabilitiesthat are manifested as unexpected difficulties with word recognition, spelling, language comprehension, and reading fluency;
b) and inclusion of thedefinition,diagnosticcriteria, description information, and affirmation of known treatmentprotocolsfor this developmental reading disorder.

Dyslexia is a real disorder with a clear definition. It impacts a persons ability to be a productive contributing citizen and earn a living! It is a severe disability in many cases.
My son has dyslexia and it is becoming really hard to get the services he needs in school in order to have good progress toward his high school diploma. It hurts his progress when schools have to find an alternate method that, most of the time, do not work or do not work well. Its a disability. It might not be yours but it's theirs and they need help.
The State of CT has just passed legislation requiring schools to recognize and provide accommodation and therapy for Dylsexia. Get with it. It should be covered everywhere. It's real.
My wife has dyslexia and it is extremely hard for her to read and understand what what she just read. She is a college student now and doing her homework is hard enough and takes three times as long for her
Please reinstate the term "dyslexia" in the DSM V to insure that dyslexic individuals are properly diagnosed and eligible for appropriate interventions and accommodations.
Please do not take a step backwards for America's children with learning disabilities. Many children have gone on to become productive citizens with the past disorder properly diagnosed and treated.
We need conserve Dyslexia as a real disorder,we need see the dificullt.
