one of my favorites songs ever

It was so good to see this beautiful, moving song nominated. I support Bruce Broughton and Dennis Spiegel.

I support Bruce wholeheartedly!

Reinstate the song. By not doing so, you are showing the world the Academy has a double standard and a lack of ethics

The Academy’s decision to rescind Bruce Broughton’s song “Alone Yet Not Alone” is deplorable. Putting aside any nonsense argument that this is liberal Hollywood versus the Religious World, the concept that Mr Broughton was doing anything unethical is a high absurdity considering his personality.

The problem here is not Broughton but your purposely vague standards. A person is not barred from sending out “for your consideration” emails or promotions or CDs or even copies of the movies themselves. You ARE prohibited from directly soliciting votes from academy members. 

But everyone in the Hollywood system gets around this by sending things to guilds and unions instead of directly asking people. To determine the difference would require The Academy to have a far sharper axe to split a hair so fine. It was bad enough when in 2002 your group purposely blocked Howard Shore from being nominated for The Two Towers based on the percentage of new themes made for the film - a rule not since used again in over a decade - but somehow didn’t block him for winning for Return Of The King the year after.

Personally, I find this news disgusting to a previously known extreme and look forward to going out of my way to not watch the Awards ceremonies and letting everyone in my circle - Facebook, Twitter and any other form of media service at my disposal - about your arbitrary system of ruling. You people should be ashamed of yourselves.

Please reinstate this nomination, it deserves recognition

As as classical musician and recent recipient of the Queen's Medal for Music from Queen Elizabeth ii I would like to support the huge integrity and honesty of Mr Broughton. This song really comes like a clarion call of honesty when you hear it, and how ironic it should suffer such a fate at the hands of a group of people clearly totally beholden to Mammen.

I agree with the petition’s intent, though would suggest a clarification in the wording: “…demand that the Board of Governors prove that no other nominations in the 2014 Academy Awards (in any category) have been promoted in ways similar to, or more aggressively, than ‘Alone Yet Not Alone.’”

Sometimes the right thing to do can't always be spelled out in a governing policy. This is one of those cases. The Academy board as a whole needs to understand there's a reason why there is a board in the first place. It is made up of individuals who have the integrity and decency to override policy when it does not apply or takes the actions of a member out of context. I know Bruce Broughton to be a man of the utmost integrity. A man who has given so much of himself to this industry. For the board to simply hide behind a rule that not only attacks Bruce's reputation unjustly, it's an unfortunate testament to the quality of persons who can sit back and let this happen. With the degree of politics involved in Academy nominations that is common knowledge, the Academy's actions in revoking Bruce Brougton and Dennis Spiegel's nomination is a glaring reminder that it's business as usual on Oscar night. I can only conclude that one or more of the other nominees felt threatened and did a little "emailing" of their own.

Mr. Broughton's email did not "solicit votes." He asked people to listen to his song. Whether they did so and whether they voted for the song was completely up to them. How is inviting people to a screening of a film any different than asking voters to listen to a song? And although I haven't done the math, presumably it doesn't take many people in a 240-member branch, picking 5 nominees each, to nominate a song. Who is to say they didn't actually watch the movie in its qualifying run? If a movie has to play in a theater to qualify, and the credits can be seen there, why strip the songwriting credits from the Academy's DVD of the song clips?

It's funny, the claim Broughton "undermines the integrity of the Oscars voting process." However, according to the official voting rules at www.oscars.org, with the exception of Animated Feature Film, the Documentary awards, Foreign Language Film, and the Short Film awards, voters DO NOT have to prove that they have even seen any of the films nominated. How's that for integrity? "

Working in the entertainment industry as a photographer, and witnessing the "politicizing" of awards, I am truly apalled at the Academy's actions. I would love to see them ATTEMPT this with a major production company. And I totally agree that the rights and responsibilites of the voting members have been usurped. If they feel that Mr. Broughton was inappropriate, let them signify by not voting for "Alone But Not Alone".

I'm not a religious person, but I think the song is fine. Rescinding Broughton's nomination was wrong-headed

This is wrong. The song should be included. Joni performed it like no one else could because God was with her. Praying that God will change the minds of the Academy of Motion Pictures Mr. Broughton did no more than anyone else up for a nomination would do or has already done.

Please do not sully the Academy Awards to a point where their acquisition is meaningless. Congratulations to Bruce Broughton and Denis Spiegel on careers that have brought joy to millions.
