This memorial is just a plan B for when the memorial to the victims of communism falls through in order to guarantee that Harper's reign is marked in stone. This megalith is gaudy and frankly frightening. This government should be banned from constructing memorials because they have misused their powers for political posturing. Basically they have ruined the act of memorializing for everyone now.

Mr. Prime Minister Harper, if you want to live in a democracy, much less run one, work for it as these good people are doing. `

I for one of thousands of people both in Cape Breton and abroad fully support this project. For one thing this is NOT a political war memorial. There is nothing military about the statue itself. It is being built in the form of a women to welcome home the souls of thousands of fallen men and women who died and are buried overseas fighting for OUR freedom! It is a simple design meant to represent ALL mothers who lost their children during the wars. Some say it looks like a big virgin Mary, well wasn't she a mother too? Didn't she lose her son also? The Harper government has nothing to do with this, yes the foundation is looking for funding to help build it but that is a small amount compared to the millions it will raise from the private sector. My tax dollars are spent on a lot of things that I think are just plain crap, I'm sure most of you feel the same way! I certainly don't mind if a few of my dollars go towards this beautiful tribute to our vets. As far as Green Cove goes, I wonder just how many of you have ever visited that area because if you did you would not be so hung up on protecting this small point of land, that, as Allen MacKinnon previously pointed out has been blasted in the past and already has a paved parking lot. I wonder how many of you know that Highlands National Park has several man made structures located within its boundaries. Where were you all when an 18 hole golf course was being built, how about a hospital and a high school, what about the Keltic Lodge that sits within its boundaries. There are at least 3 campgounds, several playgrounds, many ski trails. hiking trails, numerous man made shelters and information buildings. Do you think they were simply built in places where wide open spaces were available, NO they were not, the trees were cut and the ground bulldozed - OMG imagine that! Were you aware that before the park expropriated most of the land in that area that Green Cove was a thriving fishing village. You would think by the way

This monstrosity does not belong in a national park! Stop this privately funded monument from being built in a national park. If the privvate investors want to build it, let them purchase privately owned land for the purpose!

Yes, I have read lots of information about this project. I have learned that the Foundation supporting it has already received $100,000 from Parks Canada contrary to their claim that the project would be privately funded, and no public money would be used. I've learned this Foundation has copyrighted the name "Mother Canada" in spite of the Vimy Ridge Foundation's opposition to using that name. And it has copyrighted the name for future "corporate opportunities".
I am not a NaySayer.
I am a YaySayer.
I say Yay to maintaining the hundreds or thousands of existing, tasteful war memorials across Canada.
I say Yay to supporting vets with real dollars, instead of cutting back their services across Canada.
I say Yay to restoring the staff and hours which were cut back in all National Parks and Historic Sites this year.
I say Yay to not letting one dollar of taxpayers money going in to support this venture.
and finally, I say Yay to preserving National Parks in their pristine condition.
Not in Green Cove, not now, not ever.

Is this a joke, as I read these comments I cant help to ask myself has any of these people read any of the info about the project or only the lies that a few people are spreading about it.I for one am for the project and it great location.Just alittle info, green cove over the years has been blasted several times for road work and right now has a paved for parking,if anything this project will protect it.As far as public funding goes does anyone know exactly how much money Parks Canada donates every year to 1000 s of things around Canada that has nothing to do with the park, this really must be a joke

This statue is both ugly and unnecessary, but to me the most egregious aspect of it is the proposed location. It is absolutely unacceptable to pour concrete all over a protected natural environment.

Put the money towards a fund that would support vets after they have served so that they get proper treatment for ptsd etc.
