Impact of Independence HS sharing with 3 Charter Schools

We are independence high school. Not independent charter schools

It's difficult to promote learning in an environment that isn't safe or positive for our students.

As an IHS senior, the news of another controversial decision made by the district isn't shocking whatsoever. I think the Superintendent should focus less on making money to put in his pocket and instead take a look at how detrimental having four schools on one campus affects students. We shouldn't point a finger and solely blame the charter schools because they didn't decide to show up and set up shop at IHS by themselves. The Superintendent and the board agreed to leasing out classrooms as well as multiple parts of our campus. Although the behavior of of the charter school students are frowned upon, it would seem off-putting to simply fence them off from the rest of the school (that won't fix the problem obviously). Perhaps it's the lack of discipline or control one has over these charter students but we cannot pretend suddenly that we are better than them. The same behavior goes on in the rest of the campus, it's just not as obvious because we're not cramped into a single corner of the school. In my opinion, the Superintendent and his board need to fix Independence's OWN problems first before they go around promising things that the majority of student's/staff didn't consent to. So long charter schools, let us work on ourselves first!

When I came to Independence as a freshman, Kipp was already there and I noticed that the Indy staff didn't have any problem with them. However when ACE and DCP came to our school, problems began to arise. Their students roaming OUR campus, making loud noises that disrupts classrooms, using our bathrooms that is out of their boundaries, it's just not fair.

The incidents you are describing took place over TWENTY years ago! Things have changed, and attending Independence for a period of time will be enough evidence for that. As a senior student of Independence, I can say that yes, I have seen altercations. But very few! Even disregarding the accusations of violence, we cannot ignore that the addition of more charter schools will strain our resources thinner and thinner. The charter schools should NOT expand their facilities within a school with already strained resources.

This is just the beginning of an effort to bring jusice to our campus, please don't let it progress further than it has to.

The charter schools are on our campus, if they want more of OUR school campus then how are we supposed to accommodate our increased population next year?

I care for the Saftey of my fellow independence students. I have heard about incidents where the charter schools target independence students and try to taunt or harass them. These charter schools schould move somewhere else.

In general, the students at these charter schools have little to NO respect for our campus and its students. They litter our pathways, tag our bathrooms, and even HARASS our students during passing periods, yet their staff chooses to turn a blind eye.

I support Independence High School!

I disapprove with these charter schools taking up space at our campus. Not only are they cause a mess in the B-Common bathroom, but also took the time away from the usage of the stadium fields and the gyms for the students that are doing after school extracurricular activities. Thus, I propose that these charters ought to remove themselves from our campus. We don't need additional schools as big as we are.

This is a no brainer

Our school already has ace and I feel like we're already cramped up on everything that were sharing. The time periods for our schools have already barely matched up, causing more students to be out at once.

The Independence Winter Percussion and Winter Guard programs are just as hardworking and important as the Sports teams of Independence. For years the performing arts groups and sports teams have shared the facilities and worked out times to share the gym. Due to the Charter Schools being added, they've taken over what would be our gym time. If any of you aren't familiar with the nature of the sport, it is suppose to be rehearsed indoors (although clearly can be done outdoors). Its ridiculous having our Winter Guard/Percussion program practice from 6-9pm outdoors because a charter school team is using OUR gym. If money allows, maybe one solution that could benefit both Independence and the Charter schools is building a new gym strictly for Independence or the Charters. Many of my peers are in the sports programs at Independence and students and staff from each sport has complained about how its annoying and difficult sharing our facilities with the charter school teams. It is not fair for the students of Independence to not be able to use their own facilities when needed. Hopefully this problem will have a solution that will benefit Independence, if not every school.

They should not put more then 2 carters on the Independence campus. The students don't deserve to be crowded and should have a safe place to learn.

Although I don't go to this school anymore, I've had many students and teachers complain about these charter school students. They are rude, especially towards the K building teachers, while their instructors stand by and let it happen. Independence High School for IHS students, simple as that

The overcrowding comes to a problem for any program that wants to use a facility from clubs to performing arts to teams. It is just a mess.
