Impact of Independence HS sharing with 3 Charter Schools

Dear IHS, why are we sharing with other schools--we're already a big school! That's ridiculous! It's already hard enough for IHS students to get along, now there has to be more conflict with other schools? So many IHS bright minds' potential being hindered by things that can be modified/prevented. As a student, you should study for tests and work on projects and LEARN and enjoy time for lunch and breaks with friends; and not study what to do to avoid people and work on being on your toes, looking over your shoulders and resort to violence to feel "safe". Please do something about this. I hope for the best for my alma mater! It was a great school when I was there! Sincerely, Proud IHS Alumna

please give us back our campus.

As a 2000 IHS graduate, this sounds unreasonable. Charter schools should find another off campus location. This will only benefit all students!

Not really

One of the charter schools targets is the A-06 Finance Center, which is the classroom for our leadership class. This is also where our Bank, ASB, Activities Director, and Athletics Office is held. It is also the place where the students in class office spend most of their time painting/planning for events, host meetings, practices, etc. As a current class officer, I would be devastated to hear that the place I spent most of my time in is being teared down into a two story building JUST for the charter schools. Another target of theirs is the K (science) and G (art) buildings. In my freshman year, my multimedia class was in the G buildings and was covered with absolutely beautiful murals and paintings done by students. I got such a scenic view every day I went to class. Toward the end of that year, my art teacher told us to take a class picture in one of the murals because it was gonna be repainted and teared down. The murals represented history and passion done by former students, so do you think they would feel to see the wall, once painted by them, now transformed into a plain white wall stripped of its history? In Junior year, I had a chemistry class in the K buildings. I remember my TEACHER on the phone with administration saying that SHE was HARASSED by a STUDENT from the charter schools. When I went to the bathroom in that class, the charter kid students would be inconsiderately outside the classrooms, which usually distracted us in class. This was not a one-time thing, we would be distracted many times, disrupting our time learning. I would hate to see my school stripped from its history.

Thank you for sharing this information. Not only is it a priority, but extremely crucial to maintain a safe environment for all students. Especially during this time where you see all around us the violent events that are becoming more frequent within schools. This needs to be addressed immediately and in no way overlooked.

IHS Senior here. The charter schools are clearly causing a lot of issues that need attention.

This is ridiculous. I am a former IHS student. Give the school back to IHS students.

These charter schools are not good for the sports teams and is begining to interfere with our schools teachings in PE

It is disturbing to know that the District would impose on our students such an undesirable situation, while they sit at their comfortable office choosing to ignore the seriousness of it. Wake up and make our school safe! Stop ignoring our students, teachers and staff members!

I am an advisor for INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL for 8 years and have been involved in other activities like the steam group and the engendering programs. I have noticed that graffiti, fighting, campus over crowding, and students complaining about the other schools causing the problem. Anytime you increase the number of people in a given area, you will have problems. it's like the old saying if you have to few workers the work does not get done, too many workers, the work doesn't get done. In this case, if you have to few of students you have less problems...if you increase the numbers. The problems with scheduling, sharing bathrooms, sports fields, gyms, the crime will increase. Everyone who have attended school knows you become attached, faithful and if any other school treads on you, it becomes a RIVAL SCHOOL. This is a natural. These kids are sharing everything. What happened to common sense. Really, what happened to common sense. I have been in business for 30 years. I would have never been in favor of the Charter Schools moving on the Independence High School Campus. They charge enough to lease their own locations. I am sure they are just as un happy as IHS. All schools are going to increase in enrollment which causes more problems

This is the campus of Independence High School, not to charter schools. Honestly, they bring a bad environment to the students. As a school they should have their own place for themselves and not being in the way of other schools.

Mixing charter schools w/ traditional schools on the same campus has never been a good idea. Charters function differently and need to be on their own sperate campus. Thomas Key Former IHS Head counselor/teacher
