I'm an ARA Sergeant. The way the media handled this was appalling. The term "Gunman" should never have been used. The police, on identifying it wasn't a real firearm, should have holstered their weapons and de-escalated the amount of force they used. I understand they need to respond to calls of this type with due care etc, but once the situation is known - calm down!

What a disgrace! Did not look like a weapon at all and if the police cant tell a real rifle from an obvious made out of square box tube training itam ? Kids run around playing with toy guns that look the more real thing? Leave the poor grunt alone for god sakes ! After all, he was only training so that he may one day risk his life for us and country.

What a joke when an Australian soldier in training is even facing court over this situation...get real...these guys are out there fighting for us...we should be commending them

Ozzie soldiers deserve NOT to be judged by some hill-billy judge that spent 7 years at uni masturbating while this bloke was running around the hills who knows where.

Terrorism has won if ridiculous decisions like this are upheld. Reverse the charge now.

He should not have been charged once police ascertained he was not armed, was in the ADF and was in training for the SAS.

Since when have the services stopped looking out for each other? The attending police officers should have, once they realised he was training, told him to choose a less ominous looking training aid and sent him on his way.
